"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I have to go back and catch up, but we had a scary weekend!!
The story...

My husband had to run by the flooring store we use to pick up tile Saturday morning before football. When he parked, a weird guy was walking around and walked up to his truck, looked at it and it the bed and said, "This one won't work." then he moved to the next truck and looked at it and said, "Let me get my duffle bags". My husband, didn't think anything of it (

) and went into the store. The girls then told him about the "weird guy" who had come in and asked to use their phone and computer. Some idiot let him and he was there for about 15/20 min. using it. He then left. At 12noon when the flooring store was closing, the girl went into the parking lot and told the guy he had to leave because they had to close and lock the gate. At that point, the guy pulls out a gun and puts it to his head. He then starts walking toward a parked sheriff's car in the lot next door. The girl runs into the flooring store and locks the door. Long story short, the guy ends up walking a little further to a new gas station, where he starts making his "demands". Wants to talk to the Texas governor, etc. LOTS of "talk". He ends up pulling the trigger, but the gun doesn't go off, and the police shoot him with a bean bag gun and he is taken into custody. My poor flooring sales rep was really freaked out...if that guy had walked back toward her and the store instead of toward the sheriff's car, it could have been a different story.

I fussed at my husband that he needed to PAY ATTENTION to people in the parking lots. He could have too easily become a statistic if his truck was to this guys liking. He said he was used to crazy, he's in construction.

Just got an update from my flooring rep. There are helicopters and police dogs looking for the unaccounted for girlfriend in the woods. Turns out this guys arms were freshly scratched up and welted. This looks like it could take an even uglier turn.

I am glad they are both safe and the cops are looking for the girlfriend. Just because he has met some really crazy people in construction doesn't mean he needs to let his guard down. This world is turning into a special kind of crazy I haven't seen since the early '90's lately.

Lost some chicks this morning

they're just gone

No way to escape, indoors. I think somethin came thru an attached shed. Sucks. There are a few left that were so scared. I feel horrible.
I searched for any signs, looked for entry points and cleaned, searched for a lid to brooder came back and found my EE hen snuck in and snuggled up with babies. i didn't think EEs went broody, maybe she's laying an egg and showing the biddies some love? She's making all sorts of weird noises and trying to cuddle. weird because she's Not like that

So cute. I didn't know if I should boot her out or not but she seems so calm, usually she's a crazy basket case lol
I heard chicks raised by broodies are better off in the long run and have less issues joining flocks. Hmmmm maybe I hope she hangs out too!

Sorry about your loss!

When my broody was killed by the hawk my head hen (gold star) who had never in her life thought about going broody took over as mom. When the hawk cam back she dragged all the remaining chicks into the overgrown pig shelter for safety. She was the very last one I expected to care for chicks but she did a great job. I suggest you give that one a chance to play mom and protect them. You may need to upgrade security for the brooder or even lock the lid at night.

OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so sorry to hear that.

And I just love the mother EE. She is too cute!! Looks like she is loving that moment. I hope she stays with them. :)

She is oh so loving that. I hope she can stay in with them. Seems like just what she needs to calm her down. I love that pic!

Omg. So glad no innocents were hurt.
I work nights and am super aware of my surroundings and people near me. Actually noticing crazy is scary and if you do "see" crazy in a stranger, keep your distance no matter what. Better to be a lil rude than end up a victim of a 'snap'.

I'm overly helpful sometimes putting me in close proximity to people and their vehicles, some of those people have made me quite nervous and layer finding out my gut was right was even scarier.

A lot of Men are different, tough guys (in a nice way lol) but they are less alarmed I think because testosterone tells them its cool I got this like they're not victims usually, they'd be willing to fight off a crazy...but depending on how twisted the individuals mind is it doesn't matter who they take with them.

I posted this on my broiler thread about my broilers, so I thought I would copy and paste and post the same info here.

Good morning everyone. Just an update on the broilers.

All of them are doing great. Their appetites are increasing and they are still moving around, jumping around and flying around. They are doing well in their outside dog kennel pen. The lowest temp since they have been out there was 43 degrees. They were all bunched up together but they survived. No one froze to death. The lows Friday night will be 34 and I am hoping that they will be ok.

I am not planning on putting a heat lamp outside right now but I'm sure I will get a little paranoid and change my mind.

I am happy to say that the chicken plucker is FINALLY completed and working. THANK GOODNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so glad that I didn't pester my builder to "get her done" because he finally figured it out.

I have not lost any from leg issues or any other medical issues. However we did have to test out the chicken plucker, so we processed one broiler this Saturday. After one test run and we noticed that a few nails were sticking up where they shouldn't, so he had to cut the nails out of the bottom plate. Also looks like I will need more chicken fingers. 50 doesn't seem like enough but it did the job.

So, we initially decided to process one of the smaller broilers to test it out. I didn't want to deal with setting up a killing cone and all of that other stuff, so we decided to "do the deed" using a high powered pellet gun. This high powered pellet gun can kill a raccoon, opossum, dog and any small to medium size predator, so we knew it would work on the small broilers. I got an old feed bag, created a tight fit and situated the broiler in a stable position so that it could not move and get out of the bag. Once the broiler was stabilized, I placed the pellet gun to it's head and pulled the trigger. Perfect shot and he was gone instantly. There was minimal blood shed as opposed to slitting the throat and letting it drain out. Not sure I will do that with all of them (that's too many shots to take) but it was less to deal with and there was minimal set up and clean up.

His live weight was not a lot, which is why we chose a smaller one. Keeping the larger broilers and giving the bigger ones more time to put on weight.

2 lbs 9.9 ounces live weight

1 lb 12.0 ounces dressed weight

For those of you who remember the very first broiler that I processed - the one that got smashed? Well, we cooked it this weekend. We made a chicken gumbo. You would think that it would not have made a big meal because the dressed weight was only 1 lb 10 ounces but I was shocked at how much meat we had. It was enough meat to serve 3 adults and 1 child. If it were only myself, this would have been 4 meals for me.

So for those of you who may get slow growing broilers or other meat birds, please do not get discouraged if they are not growing as fast as you would like for them to grow or if their weight is not as heavy (meatie) as you would like for them to be because as small as you think they are, they will still be enough meat if mine are 1 lb 10 ounces dressed.

Here is a pic of the cooked broiler. I don't like a lot of juice in my gumbo, so you can fully see what it looked like. And I must add that it was DELICIOUS!

So this Friday, they will be 8 weeks old but they have plenty of more growing to do. I probably won't process them for another 4 - 8 weeks depending on how much they weigh. It's a slow process but I am patient. After tasting the meat on this weekend, it's all worth the wait.

Oh and I had a delicious glass of pineapple wine with this meal.

That looks delicious -- ALL of it! I'm glad your plucker is working!

I forgot to mention that Satan's Army Wives are laying eggs. I don't think I want to bring any more demons into this world.

Fighting between them has gotten so bad, they have injured one of their one, so now he is in a pen and he is isolated from the rest. I"m not sure if he is going to make it. He can't walk at all. He is eating and drinking and pooping (loose poop) but he is losing weight. I am having to put vitamins in his water. I may have to tube feed him. His foot is so swollen. Very hot to the touch. He has been penned up for 2 weeks now. :/

Yes, as I said, they're going to be right behind my house--a very different situation from the pasture. We have a dog that will alert us to any predators, and I'll be able to hear what's going on. I'm a very light sleeper. The coop will be reinforced. We haven't had any problems with our coop design for three years now, and we've had plenty of predator attempts. This is the first issue we've had. Our GP recently passed away, giving pasture predators plenty of time to work hard at getting in.

Feverish could be a sign of infection. Hope things start looking up for him.
