kuntry, I have a question for you.

When you had Cornish X chickens, (the big ones)  How long did it take for them to feather out fully?  If I were to try to keep any of these a bit longer than the 8weeks I am wondering how long it would take for their skin to be covered.  I have had the darndest time keeping my "Nuggets" safe from all of the Plymouth Rocks that are the same age.  Those little brats will pick at any little pin feather that they see if they are not fully entertained.  I finally separated all the White Plymouth Rocks.  They seem to be worse than the Buff ones, but they still do it occasionally.

It seemed like it too FOREVER!!!!!! They had bald spots all over. Looked like they had Alopecia Hair Loss. Seems like it took mine a good 8 weeks to get all of their feathers. Besides slow growing (weight), they were slow to feather up. It was depressing. I think this has been the WORST farm project in all my life of having farm animals. But it won't stop me from getting another smaller batch. I still want to try about 25 again to see how fast and big they grow.

How are yours coming along all together? Will you try raising them again in the future?

No new babies yet. After yesterday's delivery I don't want ANYMORE !!!!!!!!!!!!

Good grief ya'll have been a talkative bunch! I'll have to come back later & try to catch up! -- doing payroll right now. My uncle is home & his daughter is lining up caretakers for both of her parents so they can stay in their home for a little longer anyway. My boss is having surgery on her shoulder this morning & will be out for a month so it's very quiet in my corner of the office - feels strange to be all by myself over here! I fertilized my citrus trees yesterday after work & am now waiting on rain to melt it into the ground. Hens are happy - I opened up what used to be the peacock pen to them so their run space is now doubled - they love it! And although I miss my peas, I'm rediscovering why I loved having chickens in the first place. I donated 3 dozen eggs to the Manna House, who feeds anyone who walks through their doors. I like watching the hens putter around & listening to them talk & having them run after me when I let them out. It's peaceful again.

Good morning peeps. I have meant to say how much I love my Amercaunas. They are a bit wierd and skittish, but are so cute and curious. For those sort of hiding their birds in a subdivision: they are very quiet. They make the softest little peeps sound. My big girls can easily be as loud as a roo. If I am in the yard or they lay an egg, wow, they are really loud. If I sit down, the Amercaunas are the first to come close. That snuggling hen video posted by Angel was an Amercauna. When I first got them they screamed like they were scalded if you touched them. After a few months I fell in love. Lots of personality.

Ok, about being undercharged. I told them about the problem. I talked to the manager. He thanked me for being honest and letting them know . He said that he wasn't going to make me pay the difference because it was their fault and not mine. Sooooooooooooooo, I did my part and let them know. But I don't understand how that works with the store and their inventory and money and stuff like that. Not sure how they can justify that in their store profit/shortage.

So, I have an extra $28.00 in my pocket.

If a manager knows there is a problem they can write it off as a loss from a sale and fix it in their system or with the employee so it doesn't happen again. It is when money or product goes missing without a cause that it becomes a problem. You did the right thing and the manager was good to not require you to pay the rest.

I was thinking of the quick growing Cornish. I had read some time back, somewhere here on byc about you keeping a couple of the quick growers for a longer time. Seems like I saw a pic of 3 hens maybe? Anyway they looked feathered and I was just curious how long that type took to feather out.

I hope you do get the chance to try a batch of the quick growers. They are a good deal of work to keep clean, but its worth it for the amount of meat they put in the freezer.

Mine are doing good. They have been raised with the other chicks (minus the White Plymouth Rocks). I only have 6 and they all were supposed to be hens, but I think one is a roo. They are pretty friendly and love to come and get a tummy/chest rub. They are 5 weeks now and growing pretty good. I'm not pushing them too hard though.

IF (that's a big IF) one of the hens were to survive and last to an early breeding age I am considering trying to slip a bit of those genetics into our meat breeders. I have read where other people have done it and I think it would really help. While it would be nice, I'm not counting on it.
