Sweetie, is he determined to stay home?  He will need nursing full time almost immediately.  A gentle reminder might get through.  I don't think he has time to set up home health.  He's going to need more.  My heart breaks for both of you.    You are such a loving person.

Thank you so much. You can't imagine how much the experience of you guys has helped. His hospice nurse only comes 2 times a week but doesn't do much, just vitals. I am going to try to be there when she comes tomorrow. She is associated with a hospice facility. I asked him today if he is thinking of that. He said he wants to get a hospital bed for his house and stay in his house. He will let me talk to the nurse if I'm there. Maybe that would give me more info.

Oh ma goodness!  I just saw this case posted on the fb page of Cenla bottomline News........the owners of the Chi are saying that the chicken owner came and shot the dog on their property while it was locked in its own backyard.  I wonder if that's true.  I think the shooter is still in the clear though because he was trying to prevent this from recurring after it had already happened twice.

Some of the comments on the post are just ignorant though.  Like, "How absurd, a Chi would/could never kill a chicken".   I know for a fact that they can and will......for FUN!  Many years ago we tried adopting a little sweet Chi.  We unfortunately found out it liked to and could chase down and kill o

ne of my full grown hens that was almost 3 times the size of the dog.  Happiest dog in the world when I caught him with one of my hens dead in front of him.  He didn't understand why I could ever be upset about what he had done, he though he had done a great job.  We had to rehome him.

The two times my Chi mix got around mine she chased my girls with intense purpose and scared the chickens terribly. I caught the dog before she caught the chicken. I would never trust her with the chickens and she could do lots of damage if she wanted to. I have good safeguards in place.

I think you should be there when the hospice nurse comes. He could be getting a lot more services. I have been through this a few times where they pass at home. Once he is bed ridden all the way he will have more pain and they will give meds to take care of it. When they start morphine he will need someone there if he has strength he may dream he is doing something and try to get up and do it . If he has no strength he will probably stay in bed in a dream like state. May call out etc. they hospice wants to keep him comfortable , sometimes they get restless when they give morphine. So if he takes it without any thing like I've described he will probably pass fast. You know him the best you can tell when he is ready to pass. The last day I sat with my grandpa he was very hot. I would take a cool rag and put it on his forehead . He would settle down. My grand mother asked why I was doing that, because she didn't think he knew or was having any feelings. I told her it settled him down and it didn't bother me if he knew or not. So that last day I told him how much I loved him and that it was O K for him to leave. They lived in N O. When I got home they called and said he had passed shortly after I left. So even tho he was in a coma like state I feel he heard me and knew it was time to go. I hope this helps you. He went peacefully no round the clock nurse. He did have a hospital bed and hospice. If he winds up needing the hospice house you should feel good about everything you've done to help your friend. Y'all are in my prayers.

I don't know about Livingston Parish but an incident took place in this area recently.

Good advice! My neighbors dog came on my property & meet Prince my gelding yes they got chased by a horse & on the way out found out that the electric fence hurts more than a horse chasing them. Have not been around ever since.

Strength for seemingly simple tasks just isn't there and most don't realize that. Hang in there. It only gets harder.
My aunt died of cancer at home at 37. It's so hard for the living to cope, when we were sad or at a loss as to what to do for her during certain times of day that she would struggle so hard live, she would tell us to just "Hold On
Pain Ends"...(H.O.P.E.)
"How are you holding up?" She would ask us. Really?! We would hug and giggle, but she was serious. She would tell us to help her kids after she goes because death was welcomed by her and would bear the most pain on the living.
( she was suffering a long time and had come to terms well before any of us did then)

So hang in there. I know its heartbreaking and mind opening and can be very overwhelming but you're awesome for taking on the task and giving so much love when one needs it the most.

I am so sorry to hear that your friend has gotten weaker. I am so sad. You are truly a dear friend. Do not feel bad about anything. You are doing everything for him right now and he appreciates that. You are a true blessing from God. Your friend knows that you love him and are doing everything that you can. My heart is sad hearing about your friend but an angel will soon be resting with no pain. Stay strong for him and keep on doing what you can.

I am praying for him and strength for you.

Yep a dog on its owners property is a pet, a dog on someones else's property is a predator. That is the way it goes. You do have the right to protect your livestock (used to be a hanging offense not too long ago/horse thievery) Your nieghbor is trying to buffalo(bully) you by telling you that you cant do a thing about it.  A 12 ga. shotgun with 00 buckshot will solve that problem, and the neighbor too if he attempts anything stupidly, unhuh.

That's why I'm a picture taking fool. I will take a pic of EVERYTHING and ANYTHING. You just never know. I am always taking pics of dogs on my property right before I get out the pellet gun.

If it's on your property, hurting, stalking, even giving the stink eye to your stock, it can be killed. Pet or not. As a pet of a dog or a cat it is the dog or cat owners responsibility. Period. Lack of responsibility results in a dead pet. If a dog is on your property the dog owners failed. Period.
Here in the city even cats have a set of rules. Only allowed loose outdoors under supervision hahaha ya right.
Pet owners making ignorant comments shouldn't have pets or should consistently be dragged into court until they realize the responsibility. Strays or pets loose here have a bullet or an arrow awaiting them.

Any dog not accustomed to chickens would likely chase/kill one. Smaller dogs find it more FUN because its a big ticket prey item for their littleness.
Everything loves chicken. Everything. And not always in the cuddly way!

If it's true they shot the dog on the dog owners property and no immediate threat was taking place the shooter will face charges -trespassing, animal cruelty, other animal charges if dog was restrained-dog owner could have them jailed for weapons threat on his property if they were in fear or trying to stop shooting (attacking a human is the only thing in court that will hold up unless the dog returned to its property with livestock while attacking, proof, lotsa proof needed)
Possible it happened after an attack tho.
Sounds unlikely they'd just go over and shoot a dog but, Anger from the flock owner? Previous incidents or a feud? Who knows but I had a flock wiped out and was ready to kill attacker even afterwards (i have better sense than that tho as do most)

TGIF! it poured down rain all night but it's WARM rain so it's OK!
I was up at 3 a.m. letting dogs out (in the rain) - 8 muddy feet to wipe (cleaned out rock garden & need to get pea gravel - right now it's big rocks and mud).
And again at 4 a.m. And at 5 a.m. the cat let out a squall & hacked up a big hairball on the living rug.

The laundry fairies & the kitchen gnomes did not show up to do their jobs. Can't depend on the little suckers for anything!

I'm going to get through this long (long long) day & go home & fry catfish!

Tractor supply PULLET chicks are starting to ROO up! ug looks like 2 of Broody henBlues chicks are roos! I wonder if I can return them lol I bought "pullets and paid .50 more for sexed chicks butt heads. Like I need more roos. It's sorta embarrassing as a store that's all about farms to not know *# &%! About what they sell (live or on a shelf)
