I ordered some crested cream legbar chicks, blue black red laced Wyandotte's they shipped with out putting a heat pack and they all died except two. It was very traumatizing I've never had chicks die before. They are replacing the order next week provided they hatch enough poulets. I'm hoping the surviving two chicks are the legbars sense they are still on the rare breed list. They are 4 days old. I have Wyandott's but not in this color so that's why I don't know what these chicks are yet. Angelisi did you ever find out for sure if yours is a roo?
For the newbe's I have black australorps, gold laced and silver laced Wyandotte's ,one bantam game hen, EE gers, barred rocks and two Phoenix Hoping ones a hen. The 2 chicks and we'll see what happens next week if all goes well.
I also have 2 GSD German Shepard Dogs from German show lines that are the other loves of my life. 1 Pom love him too! But I've had GSD's in my life since birth. And one cat. Ask any and all questions if we can't answer we know who can. Pam.

Including the inside, which was made to make it easy to clean, Its so I can do it with out any problems. I was in a bad car accdent a while back. You should document your build the same way taking pics after each day you'ved worked on it. It might help somone elas along the way. Pam

Love the coop!

I didn't find out yet....none are crowing yet at almost 12 weeks old. Still not sure if it is!

The you have one pictured, "her" head looks a lot like my welsummer when she was about 8 weeks. Lol

That comb in the pic is large but I'd need a full body shot to guess roo after watching my lil -swear it was a roo chick - turned out to have a big old fluffy but and nest) I always wait for a crow since a received 2 roosters that ended up laying eggs from a seasoned chicken keeper :gig

Here's my mystery chick.

Thank you for the warm welcome and advice. I am still trying to learn as much as I can about chickens. I posted my coop build int he coop build section with pictures if you want to take a look. The title of the thread is Spofoe Farm Build Thread.
I have 5 hens, How often should I feed them? Just keep their feeder topped off and water in the bowl?

I had been feeding fomented feed, I would put food out twice a day. Water topped as often as possible. I had 16 chickens with fomented feed 1 bag seemed to last for a month. I am down to 8 and I have used twice the feed. I have freeloaders that consume way to much. I am going to be traveling for a few years with 3 chickens, at this time I am selling my present flock. Too stressful for older girls to adjust to life on the road, I love my girls to much to put them thru that. A lot of good folks around you do the same on feeding fermented food, they can help you, there is also a thread on fermenting.

It depends on where your feeder is, what you feed, and what kind of feeder you use. After trying many feeders I finally settled on this one for dry feed: http://www.strombergschickens.com/product/Galvanized-Grill-Poultry-Feeder/ This feeder prevents waste by them scratching it out into the litter and it stays full. For fermented feed you want to feed once or twice a day and make sure that it is enough for the entire day plus a morning snack before you open the coop. Just add in more water if it dries up threw out the day. If you keep your feeder outside then you want to make sure there is nothing left in it at night time or you can lock it up somewhere. Strangely enough stray cats and coons will eat chicken feed here. You also have to worry about opossums and rats getting into it outside. If you free range them then they will hardly eat any food for spring, summer, and part of fall. They will eat the most in winter so you'll have to adjust if you are on daily feedings. If you raise them in a pen you will go threw a ton more feed if you don't do something like a chicken garden. Boredom and lack of good foraging is what causes the extra consumption of feed. You can combat this by adding pallet gardens, screen gardens, heads of cabbage, open watermelon, crickets, flock block, and a swing to their run. *Flock blocks and rain do not get along! Put it under shelter.

Looks like my hens! I think its easier to tell from tail feathers.I woke up to find out one of mine got attacked by a 6 pack of dogs that looked like they were the same mixed breed. It woke my neighbor up and she called ron and saw the dogs. I think she saved her from death. I'm going to go doctor her to see if she needs ICU in my utillity room. I think I may post it sence we have alot of new peeps. My bet its a hen. Happy mothers day!!! Pam
