"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

One of our favorite little young bantams nearly gave me a heart attack last night!

We have this little mixed flock that were hatched out at the elementary school. We put them in one of the stalls in the new chicken barn a couple of days ago so they could check it out and play in there. In the evening we have been putting them up into a very secure cage for the night and then back down to play in the morning. They have food and water in both places.

Last night I didn't go out until AFTER sunset. DUMB move!!! This little darling decided to go on an adventure sometime in the couple of hours since we had been out.

I was in the garden picking salad (by flashlight)

and was wondering why my husband turned on the big halogen work lights instead of just using his hand held light to get the babies moved up. Then he was moving around and looking around. I got a SICK feeling in my stomach! Ugh!!! We searched and searched. No feathers anywhere! And no baby

, I was having a heart attack!!! I kept thinking of having to tell my kids that the favorite baby of all four of us was gone. NOT the scene you want to go through at bedtime. Then hubby found him!! Over by the greenhouse where they used to sleep at night. I nearly cried in relief. WHAT A SAP! Can't help it! It was a little chilled so we brought it in to give it a little warm blowdry just to make sure it wasn't damp down in her(I hope) feathers.

This cutie is a black sizzle. Back safe and sound, looking down at the cat who was mreowing at me. Looks WAY bigger in this picture that she is. Her flight feathers are coming in shiny green just like her daddy. Not her best picture.

So her name was finalized last night. "Houdini's Empress Midnight Phro" and I am so glad that I survived her adventures!!!

This is a great observation! Watch your yards when this weather rolls in! We also use landscape timbers to block / divert water from the least flooded areas. So good to see it before building if you build at ground level! I know some people put coops up too on stilts/platform and then they never worry about flooding.
It sucks that everything is flooding right now, but now I know that I shouldn't put the coop in the spot where I originally wanted to put it.

Dogs... dogs really? At 6 am? 2
Large loose dogs doing laps around the rabbitry knee deep in mud, so I grab my gun and extra ammo and run for the rabbitry in the downpour of a storm. I holler at them now standing in back of it trying to get in to a bunny cage through wire wrapped enclosure (thank you baby for enclosing the rabbitry itself in wire!), I raise my gun, my own dog at my side growls and both trespassers turn and start wagging huge tails and rolling in the mud. Maaaaan, deflated - lucky, lucky dogs- if I was more confident in my distance accuracy I'd have shot those dogs from my porch without blinking. Someone almost lost their dogs today to a bullet. One completely without tags one with a collar but definitely well fed. Couldn't see that until after the drama in the storm, Now they're loose on a 45 mph road in the pouring rain. They're going to get hit or worse, kill someone on that unforgiving road. Shameful. I'm still mad.
I expect wildlife, I don't want to put someones pet down tho.

BE RESPONSIBLE PEOPLE AND KEEP YOUR ANIMALS UNDER SUPERVISION. Because so many don't and then they're a predator threat :(

Theres mud slung ALL OVER from the dogs pounding away at a wire wrap. All over cages, babies, mommy buns & bucks :( thick Louisiana mud too. Ug. White bunnies and mud are just sad looking. Off to clean up...

Take Rons advice, add some honey to their water until you get the feed store to cooperate.
Separate the ill to monitor. What's the poop look like? Any red? Liquidy? Ifs it solid and normal maybe not cocci? Add vitamin B to their water as a precaution. A vitamin deficiency can cause similar symptoms. Hope she pulls through.
So, I need some more help/advice.
My lavender orpington has died. She had been lethargic for a few days. Now my mottled Orp. Has looked lethargic and not wanting to move all day. I started her with some probiotics and electrolytes but I fear it's too late. She will not even pick her head up and her eyes are closed. I went to two different feed stores to get Corid but both had no idea what I was talking about. ( how was that possible?!?!) I tried to explain that I suspected that the chicken had cocci. It was like I was speaking a different laungauge. So now I am down to one Orpington that looks and is acting Ok. She might be all by herself very soon.
I have 3 other mixed chicks but they are only about a week to two old and not feathered yet.
I know chickens are meant to be in a flock. Any suggestions on what to do? Do I get her a friend? Do I wait to see if she's ok? Will she be ok by herself?!?!?!?Ahhhh!!!!!:he

Is this something that happens often?

It's been an awful 3 and worrisome days!!

Sigh!

Morning La-yers -- so much to catch up on! Welcome to all the new members. I've been busy & not online much. Rain & mud here, too. Today marks my one year anniversary with the new job. My boss said I'd better be in it for the long haul, because she was not training another secretary, & I told her I definitely was not planning on training for any new job! so we are on the same wavelength there!

The lady who got my peacocks is coming by today to borrow my bator & try & hatch some peachicks. I'm excited for her & glad it's not me. Just not in the mood this year.

Planted 80 white caladium bulbs across the front of the house, some marigolds, salvia, hanging baskets of lantana - I'm done planting for the summer! Tomatoes are blooming & everything's looking good - -hope I can still say that after the next several days' worth of rain!

Ya'll take care!
