We got our first duck egg today!!

The story of how we got it is the most hilarious thing. I've had my pekin and blue swedish drake penned up for the past few days because I added a new blue swede duck to the flock. They've gotten used to being let out every day, so they were quite mad at me. Well, I decided to test the waters and let them free range. After cleaning off and playing in the pool, my pekin drake tries to mate one of the ducks. Nothing new, he's been working on his technique for a while. After an unsuccessful attempt, they both waddle off. I walk by the spot a few minutes later and there is AN EGG! He made her lay an egg.

It was kind of slimy, and the outer layer of coloring had been rubbed off a bit in the scuffle, but it was my first duck egg from my first hand raised ducks. It couldn't have been from any other bird, because I don't have any more free ranging. I couldn't be prouder. I'm going to wait a few days to see if I can collect any more before incubating. I wish I would have taken a picture!

Kimmy, you should show your feeder on the DIY thread. Lots of good ideas there.
I hope tomorrow is my coop finishing day. I put the sides in yesterday and cut all the wood for the back, the top and the trim. I also painted and stained it all, so it should be ready to install. Then I'll touch up paint and stain and cut and mound the perches. Yea!!! It's been fun. What's next...Hummmm.

What's next? The addition to the coop!

Might as well prepare for more chicken math. As soon as I'm done adding on, it's time to add on again.

lol...Great minds and all that.  REALLY enjoyed meeting you and Ron, as well as, Buggles and her "flock".  Her "chick" has me SMITTEN!!!  lol... Great family.

That was a lot of fun thanks for the invite. I Loved meeting you and buggles mom! Her little chickide will keep her hopping. I hope her new egg is just as sweet.

I am reading in bed and am surprised I didn't wake my husband from giggling at your duck story, @forgetful!
I definitely plan on adding on in a few years when these girls are about to stop laying. We have all grown super attached to them, so they will be staying when we get more layers. Lol
