"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Now that all of my girls use the bar, they have a lot less space inside the coop to sleep. They still have room left, but they are still growing. I'm going to learn how to build my own so that I can make a bigger one. Any suggestions? Helpful things I should add to it? My husband rolled his eyes when I told him because he suspects I will make him do all of it, so I have to do it now! Lol, I have to prove I can do it! I've never built anything in my life.

You can do it there's plenty of plans on the web. we found the one we liked and printed the floor plan out. We built it with just the floor plan an a pic of the finished product. I would make a slide out trey or sling like prim did for easy clean out. Pam

I got one like it yesterday too. it was rounder then this one. I'll let you know after breakfast how many yokes are in them.

Remember, I don't know how to build, but I thought a lot about it, I would go look at houses being framed up, I would imagine structure and design, then I spent a lot of time at Lowe's. I am proud of the outcome and I can actually walk in and sit and all my girls can get on one perch with room to spare. I know I posted it before, but here it is again. I built the shelter first then built the coop under it.

The shelter.

The coop under the shelter.
Most people build the nesting boxes in the coop but I used the ones I already had and put in the bottom of the coop. Then, as you know, I recently added the poop sling to protect the nesting boxes. I have had a blast building. It's not all "square" or perfect, but all my stuff looks good and is very sturdy, a lot of it I build as I go. You have to love it to do it.

This is the tragic part of the story. The Rooster I caught him one morning trying to mate with her he was so rough for her being 1/3 his size. When they grab them by the comb or head they pull up it makes the hen fold her feathers back so they can expose where the Roo puts his sperm. Well with him on her back his feet covered her whole back so no matter how hard he pulled she couldn't fold her feathers back. Two days ago I saw him do that she was screaming in pain. I rushed in and knocked him off and saved her. I put her in a coop alone that night. She was injuried but seemed to be on the mend. Well the next night I told Ron I didn't want her in the coop with any rooster. Well he didn't follow trough. So last night I could tell she felt beat up her wing was injuried so I brought her inside. she slept inside looked ok but was moving slow. Ron brought her outside he was running electric to the coop she was right there by him. He came in and went back out he said she was standing then just fell over he picked her up he said she had a spasm by the time he brought her inside she was dieing she died in his hand. I think the roo took the oppertunity when he came inside. It would be like a full size rooster mating a chick she was that small.Text me with whatever you find out about Julie. Be carefull on your trip tomorrow. Pam

That is one of the saddest stories I have ever heard. Poor little girl.

This is the Biefelder poulet. I'm suprized how big this breed is and how sweet and easy going. They are becoming one of my favorite breeds. Can't wait till they start laying eggs they are super sized unless the large egg from today was hers. I guess tomorrow will be exam day.

This is Bertha she is the biggest badest head hen. she is down right mean to her flock mates. She makes me think she belongs in a pot. All the other hens give Bertha a wide breth. They don't even want to pass by her. She will go up in the coop early to keep the rest from roosting. I'll try to get better pics of the rest of my flock tomorrow. Pam

between you and I and the fence post, I spent more on building my own then I would have on a 4X8 shed. Next time I get a shed, modify it with nesting boxes with an out side access for collecting eggs, roosting bars and chicken door. If there isn't a window, put one in. Full door makes it easy to clean out. Not as much fun as build your own but in the long run cheaper and they work great.

Besides you can spend all you want to on fixing it up. I've seen on with insulation, fished walls (3/8" plywood) and ceiling, Cellini fan, A/C heat pump unit, curtains, framed pictures and living room furniture painted on the walls. The out side was gingerbread trim and shutters. Not sure but I think the chicken door was on a timer. A show place. Not sure if they had "Tour de Coop" were she lived.
