"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Ok smarty pants. Have you seen any Biefeleders? Lovely gentle giants. Or legbars the roosters are stunning. If you want eggs astrolorps etc. just curious what is the reason she wants chickens and what made her decide on s s. Pam

Just teasing Pam! :D
I do like the biefeleders and legbars. Honestly, I don't know if I've ever seen a chicken I didn't like. :lau

I need chickens to be like those candy stores where you fill your own bag: one of everything, please.

LOL that's why I haven't even brought up all the sneezing going on out there. It's mostly from the one with the messed up beak, and I think it's because she has to dip her beak way into the feed and water.

See how I'm improving? :D :lau

I like the Sussex, even thought I've never raised any. You are absolutely correct that the lighter breeds attract predators -- I tried several times to raise "blue" & "splash" & they are always the first ones I've lost to predators. I like Welsummers a lot & have raised several over the years, also the Cuckoo Marans - right now have six heritage Rhode Island Reds in the brooder & looking hard at Bielefelders for the future.

Thanks Terri. How are the Welsummers around kids? I've read mixed reviews.

Australorps may fit the bill... I've read a few reports they can be stand-off-ish and others, like campinshaws, say otherwise.
Minimum requirement (since kid and a not-so-into-birds hubby live here too) is that they be calm and even a bit friendly.

I only have one, so I can't speak for the whole breed. But when we joined BYC the australorps were the second-most recommended breed for us to start with.

We've had several different major flock overturns in our few months because we buy, keep the friendliest and sell the rest, then buy more. :lau This is NOT a process I recommend because it's insane (for biosecurity reasons) and can really blow up in your face. But I like where we are now and see no chicken math in my future. :D
