"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Puppy for another hen! This time I decided to process the bird and make it a family meal. It was a red sex link and much smaller than I thought it would be dressed but it sure was tasty add a chicken soup!

Not bad for my first time processing! Followed the pictures from a thread on byc.

Looks good Ricrow. Mine have a couple months before their ready to transition to the freezer. I keep telling myself I can kill them but I know it's not gonna be easy. I hear it gets easier to do once you've done the deed a few times. Even though I've hunted my whole life I still feel bad when I kill deer.

I have been taking heads for awhile now and I still feel bad when I know I have to do some. They go on the schedule with a sad face. I have had to send my kids away while I do the deed for the last 6 months. That's because everything we have killed has been named "pet" chickens. I just can't do it with a kid standing there. They think I'm goofy. After they are bled out I'm good though, and the kids help clean birds. Well, one kid more than the other, lol.

I think I have a couple of little cockerels. A Black Copp:(er Marans and a Blue Copper Marans. Hmmmm........ I'm trying to decide what I'm going to do with any little cockerels out of that batch. Try to caponize for the first time, or try to find them homes.........:caf. I still need some told if I'm going to try caponizing.

Thanks Terri. How are the Welsummers around kids? I've read mixed reviews.

Mine were breeder quality - Grisham lines - and they were nice birds, good layers of large brown eggs, some heavily speckled & really pretty. Not overly friendly but not spooky either. The roosters tended to turn mean after reaching adulthood. I raised 3 generations of them then went on to other breeds.

Been thinking about the same thing. I figure once my chicks hatch I'll have some extras too. I'm thinking I'm going to try my hand at caponizing, from what I hear/read they make outstanding meat birds and they don't have to be prepared until they are older.
We haven't named our gals, mostly because I wasn't sure if we were going to be able to keep them after they had been sick, and turns out we can't. If they come into contact with the silkies or chicks they will make them sick and the microplasma transfers to eggs. So they all have to go. I have 3 red sex links that stick together and follow me, I call them the 3 sisters and everyone else is Henrietta and Henny Penny.

We did name our roosters, Splash and Rudy, but they both died. Rudy from fowl pox and Splash, something got him, thinking is the neighbors dog. ..

Mine would still be alive if the dog hadn't killed her. ..just took the opportunity to practice for the future. When I have had to wring a neck I just make it as fast as I can and be as calm as I can so it's not too horrible for them. I don't enjoy doing it, so I try to make it as peaceful for them as I can.
