"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Awesome!
My New Years resolution is no new resolutions and to give my wife more credit than she asks for dealing with these chickens, she is wonderful and is becoming more involved, she baby sitted the bator for 2 weeks while i was offshore, 3 of her 6 WL eggs hatched, so now she is a breeder as well:woot I just thought i would drop in and let y'all know i am still alive and share some pictures of my 1st hatch Day 19, this little bugger started the party early, FBCM X EE/OE # 2 #3 Barred Rock over White Leghorn #4 FBCM over Silver Ameracauna, my favorite, Chuck Yeager the test pilot About half the hatch here. Todays egg gather, i am slowly but surely getting there, now we have 16 little fluffy buts, can not wait to see the feathering on these new ones.

The exact same thing happened to me on my first hatch. Keep going I ended up with 2 hatching that's better than none. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Pam

Had a power outage on one of my early hatches years ago, out almost 24 hrs (we didn't have a generator back then) but still had a decent hatch. Sit tight & carry on! We're all sending you positive hatching vibes!

What we WERE going to do today:

Move the outside brooder to the grow-out pen.
Tear apart the living room and thoroughly clean, dust, vacuum & rearrange furniture.

What we ARE doing today:
I went to fix a cold drink yesterday evening & when I opened the refrigerator, everything was dripping. I grabbed one of my bator thermometers -- 48 degrees! so I pitched all the soft stuff (mayo, sour cream, leftovers, etc) grabbed boxes & moved the freezer stuff to my (already-overflowing) freezer, lugged the rest to my folks house & crammed Mom's fridge full to the brim. We did everything we knew to do & then called a repairman - it was a dead relay, so at least fixable.

this morning holding temps steady & cold so will now clean all the trays & bins & put everything back in order.

And I also went to our neighbor, Inglewood & BOUGHT eggs. That new generation upstairs better get to growing fast! I am seeing red combs appearing so hopefully the old girls will get back in the game soon.

Pouring rain here so no moving anything today - we'd sink to our knees!

All things considered, could be a lot worse!

I just spent the last two weeks in MI for the holidays. I am back home now. My neighbor called me on Monday and said that she found one of my chickens dead in the run. It appears to be natural causes, although, not sure why she died. The others seem fine. The one that died was about 10 months old. One of the three BR pellets that I bought here local. That leaves me with six. I just wish that I new what the cause of death was to see if I could have prevented it.

Now I am over worried and considering moving the six into the garage for the day to give them a chance to dry off a little. That have plenty of areas to stay dry in the coop and run. For some reason they prefer to stand in the rain and look confused, lol.

I buried here in the back yard. Maybe looking at grabbing two chicks to raise will help me feel better. She would have wanted that.

I'm so ready for these chicks. A hatchery up the road is selling some foam bators for $25; I considered getting one to use as the hatching bator but ultimately decided against it.

I think I figured out the nest box issue, so now I need a dry day or two so I can make coop adjustments.

Oh I would have jumped on that!

Sorry about your hen! I am sure that someone near you has chicks. What area do you live?

I would offer some of these black mixed ones, but I think it may be 3 roosters!!! Maybe someone that knows more about the sex linked genes would know for sure. I'm thinking that its a Buff Orp roo over Barred Rock hen. 3 of the chicks have big white areas on their heads. And then we have the one that is solid dark.
