Our snake drama from Monday. We saw a small garter snake, then a green racer in the tree. No big deal, they were small. We were working on the pergola in front of the chicken barn. I had set down the black Cochin juvies to play inside the barn on the floor. They love to dust bathe in the sand. After a little bit I decided to go check on them. And this is what I came in to! 3 ft way from the babies. I freaked! We killed it and he was dinner. Along with spaghetti squash casserole. Don't mess with my chicks or broody hens!!!!!

very true. The first set of pics except for the red fowl are all the same breed. They come all different colors so when u hatch a clutch it's neat to see how they feather out. Mine come out either white with the splash candy or different shades of blue and gold but never the same. Even a pair of solid blue Will throw splash or vice versa just never know what your gonna get.aside from the few brown striped ones these are from a single mating of solid blue

Yes but unlike potato chips chickens are not fattening until eaten and help keep you busy so you burn calories :) And it's lucky for me my chick/chickens run around so much my 9 year old grandson can't get an acurrate count or he'd say the # out LOUD!!!

So I set 14 Cochin eggs under broody hens. 12 were fertile, but one was a blood ring. So we have 11 that are developing nicely. I'm really excited to see what color come out. I expect only black, and possibly mottled. We tried to stalk the barn and mark eggs with which hen had laid it. Their eggs do vary a little in appearance between the 3 hens.

The picture is Butterball, this is her first time brooding.

I'm actually impressed with the new black Cochin cock. We only plucked just a very small, small amount on him and the older black hen that came with him. We have confirmed fertility on eggs from her and we just let them breed naturally. No AI. Its my understanding that the man we got them from does AI on at least some of his birds. Not sure which ones. I would rather it be natural unless we were trying to keep a hen in better shape for the kids to show it. I am crossing my fingers and saying a prayer for this hatch!!!!!!

Haha! Mine keep me moving for sure. I think my husband quit asking how many we have. I did sell off some of our extras though. Only have 3 little mixed chicks left and I have 4 growing that we are growing for meat. They are all 4 boys. So they will go if someone gets hungry for chicken or if they start crowing, whichever comes first. 3 bantam crowers are enough for me!!!
