"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Looking good Pam :)

Wow........I put in a call to Noah so we can all get a spot in the ARK!!!
All of the Juvies we have growing in the greenhouse were being rather dense and standing around watching the rain by the door. Of course that is the wettest spot in there. The worst were the red Cochin pullets. We adjusted some things so they have less rain coming in. Goofy birds, lol. We brought the reds in and got them all dried and fluffed.

This rain is great for the garden though. And we got some free plants that will replace some I lost with that last nasty storm. What a surprise to get free plants! That was awesome! They were in need of a GOOD soak.

Thanks Lemon I'll have to take some of the rest of my chicken possie. Can't wait to see your garden before harvest.Free plants thats good news. Pam

I haven't had a chance to tell y'all about my hen that for sour crop. I've never in the whole time we have had chickens had one get sour crop. The first day I tried the usual recommended treatments and it didn't do much for her. Meanwhile I was still doing research to see if there was any other ways to treat it. Fixed my girl right up with RED WINE!!! :ya:ya I couldn't believe it. Worked like a charm. We kept her in and on little to no food at first and only the red wine mixed with water. She looked and acted SO much better and started DEMANDING to be fed, lol. I'm so glad she made it. Just started back to laying after a week being back outside. It was kind of softer shelled so I'm going to give her some vitamins to give her another boost.

I've never heard of that, How did you find it? Did you try flat coke? What does the wine do? Pam

I can't even remember where I read it. But I found it on a couple of places and it was basically the same story as my hen. Like they had tried a bunch already and the crop still wasn't really getting emptied by morning. I know this poor girl had a horrible "crop ache" because she kept drinking SO much!!! Which was not helping. So we took away all good and water and treated. But even after that it would empty all the way. The day we did the wine we diluted it and let her drink a bit. She didn't really like it. But took some. Then I would massage her crop so it mixed around good. We did that the while day every couple of hrs. Talk about a difference by bedtime. Bright eyed again. But get crop still was not 100%. It was much better, just not quite there. And she also had stretched her crop by over drinking. We let her have the wine for half the next day. And it was really diluted. We did not feed any foods during this that would feed the yeast over growth. Chopped up greens and herbs really small at first. Then gradually gave her back the normal food. I'm not sure how and why it works. But if it every happens again I will go straight for it.

That sucks, I would hope he contacts you. He should think ahead that you might be a future customer when all the AI is over. Not to mention you told him to keep your deposit he could at least say thank you. What ever happened to costumer service? Talking in general customer service seems to be a thing of the past. Sorry it's a pet peeve of mine. Pam
My thoughts exactly! Courteousness goes a long way with me.

Personally, Cody, I think you dodged a bullet. The loss of a deposit is nothing in your world compared to his world. Let's pray AI stays away from La. Now if it would just stop raining!!!
You may be right. I sure hope we don't see it in the Fall.

I read there may be a turkey shortage come Thanksgiving. I'm thinking of buying one and throwing it in the freezer just in case. They might be expensive.

Oh, and yes the rain.

It's crazy how much we've been getting.

In the summer we do get some flies around the chickens. It isn't bad, but they are annoying. Now when we had the Cornish X they did get kind of bad. I've been reading some personal recommendations for this product and reviews etc. I'm going to try it and see how I like it.

The drawbacks for me is that it is poisonous. So I will have to be very careful where this bait is placed. And my husband's comment was that if it kills the flies SO FAST then if I put bait inside the barn, then the flies would fall down dead and the chickens would be eating the poisoned flies. So I think I will bait right outside of the areas that the chickens are in.

Imidacloprid is the active ingredient. Apparently it's widely used. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imidacloprid

That's interesting about the wine for sour crop. Cure all, eh!

Well at that point I had nothing to lose since she was going down. And I figured if it didn't work then at least she would go out happy. Lol. I'm glad it worked.

I wonder if the wine would work as a sedative for caponing. When I process the Bresse I will get a look and feel for where they are and how deep to cut etc. Pam
