"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

How long have I been talking about wanting/waiting for/getting a second coop? About a year right?

WELL IT'S A THING NOW.

Here's the flooring all in!

Great! I bet you are super excited. Pam

Cajun,

What convinced you to do npip? I've thought about it, just didn't see a advantage/disadvantage either way.

What Pam said above....being able to ship chicks and hopefully "doing the right thing" for my chickens to keep a healthy flock. I really didn't see anything negative about it so I figured I'd try.
Anyway, I'm currently building a couple of brooders and I'm going to try my hand at selling eggs and chicks. Going to start with one breed and see how it goes. My wife is on board and the kids want to be involved so we will do it as a family and hopefully all get something out of it lol. I'm thinking about starting with lavender orpington. What do ya think?

I don't have them but I would want to know how they handel the heat before buying. The bigger breeds I have have been ok. I will say the Biefelders had a harder time this year than last. Pam

Can anyone shed some light on the NPIP certification process? I called today and left my name and number with the Ag dept. so that we can set up a date for a local Vet to come out and test my birds and check out my setup. Is there anything in particular I need to do in preparation for the inspection? She said they will take a blood test but didnt really say what they check for.

Do y'all know of anyone close to the Baton Rouge metro area that sell Lavender Orpingtons? English preferred

Thanks!!!

The only thing that made it quicker when they certified me for NPIP, was making sure they were in the coop. Mine free range. Also they are supposed to blood test under the wing of every bird the first year, but the guy that came out to mine did less than half. Every year after they only test 10-20%.

If you want to show chickens you'll also need to be NPIP and in many cases AI as well.
The only drawback is that you can only purchase birds or eggs from others who are NPIP. Same goes with AI our any other cert. you choose to do. It has not been an issue finding quality birds from breeders with NPIP, since most reputable breeders show or choose the certification. :)

Well I guess I'll try them and let you know how they do.....I have some due to hatch in a couple of weeks. I have a large covered run and a good bit of shade in the yard so hopefully they will be good.

OK, well from what I'm gathering it doesn't sound all that difficult....it can't hurt to take an extra measure to look out for them. Being that it's free is a bonus for me!

That's good I think your the only one with Orpingtons except the most popular Buff. I know of some with them but they are north of us.Good luck with your hatch and certification. Pam

Not sure where she's located or who she is, but there's a Julienne Hoisiin on FB - La Poultry Swap & Farmers Market - offering Lavender Orp chicks this morning. You might want to check it out.

We just moved from Florida to Abita Springs and had to go through NPIP for inspections... the process was super easy and convenient - they came to our house, took all the samples and I had a certificate in a week or so emailed to me.

They checked for Pullorum-Typhoid & Avian Influenza.
