"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

She may have been egg bound. The egg gets stuck sometimes breaks inside the vent. It would smell bad too. I would still go ahead with your plans to find out l'm sure it could be something else. Good thing you stuck with the fridge. Let us know what happens. Pam

I told my husband to go ahead and bury her but I think you may be right, Pam. Makes sense that she may have had an egg break inside of her. She was leaking clear fluid that smelled bad and the abnormally formed egg that was hanging out of her was a soft shell and was open at one end and mostly flat. So maybe it leaked inside of her or maybe it broke afterwards.

Hey Teresa,
Sorry I wasn't online earlier today.
The last time I froze a bird the vet said do not freeze them. Just keep them chilled in the fridge or in a plastic bag on ice.
Freezing them solid does damage to the organs that makes it hard to necropsy when looking for visual signs.

Thanks, Cody. I will remember that in case it happens again.

The honas were being so derpy today! It was funny, except that Ragnar began the day by crowing at 6 am. Repeatedly. In the living room. :/ But when I added hay I got to cuddle Lagertha for a bit. :love

Ragnar was NOT happy about that. He clucked and fretted until I put her back.

They are really cool. I like that I get to see how they turn out. I Got 5 eggs from mine yesterday and today. So a few more are laying. The hens are much happier now that the roos were taken out. Tomorrow night I'll put the best one back in hopefully they will continue to lay. I like the the noise they make almost like talking. Lol! Pam

Sorry she died T. I'm interested to hear what Pam says about this.

I said what I thought yesterday. I think she was egg bound and an egg broke inside of her. It rotted and she became infected. No way to know for sure but her symptoms match being egg bound. The hen was already dead when she posted asking about the necrospy. They are masters at hiding symptoms when somethings wrong. The other flock mates would pick and peck on a hen that isn't well. If the egg broke inside her which she said they found a soft shell broken inside of her I don't think their was a way to save her. Pam

I keep looking for an egg from her, but I think as long as she's in the crate that she won't lay. We've got a group of 90 this weekend, so I'm hoping to get them out into their tractor next week.
