"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Thank you all for the help! The eggs are bielefelders. They were relatively low in cost even shipped which was the only reason i got them. Made it here in 2 days from Ohio. They were bubble wrapped and double boxed. No cracked eggs but had dent in outer box. Unfortunately since I am still learning about incubating eggs these eggs have been in the incubator since I received them, in an automatic turner, with humidity around 30. I knew some looked wrong when candeling but didn't know why until I found detached air cell on google. So, they are now on day 10. Most have growth/movement. Took some out due to blood ring. Some have saddle air cells, some I can't really differentiate the air cell from the rest of the contents. Should I cull the ones that don't have clearly seen air cells? Or is it possible they will still make it to lockdown? I also read that assist in hatching is almost a guarantee.

Pam, unfortunately I can't buy anymore chickens or hatching eggs right now or I would have already bid in the auction for your Isbars. I know you take great care of your birds

But hopefully things will turn around and my husband will find a great job soon. He has been laid-off since November and things are getting tight. I had to promise to not purchase anymore hatching eggs or chickens which my friends think is the most ridiculous thing ever.

Hey mire, money is always tight, right? Me too. I've been researching ways to get some income without a lot of outlay and have come across garden bed/ catfish pond. 2' high with a pond liner, about $65. 10x 15 bed with liner stapled to be watertight. The fingerlings are about $.60 ea and you can put over 100 in there. They will be 1# in five months. Freezer for the winter? Put plastic beer cases to float on top and add grow cup hydroponics $.35 ea. Lots of salads and veggies. The produce feeds the fish and the fish waste feed the garden. Win-win.

Pam, I turned 69 yesterday. Feeling great. Recovering great from loss of Aimee. I'm planning on coming home for a while in a couple of months. I'll be visiting both places. I'm going to set up housekeeping in both. It's time I turned my attention back to chickens. I'll be able to get some again. Oh yeah. Have you been able to use the caponizing tools yet? If not, hang in there, help will be coming with info on how to. I have a pithing tool coming next week. It's from Britain where they are the bomb on this. It has a little cap I understand that you put on top of the chicken head. Open mouth and insert rod. Pull lever. Painlessly, killing the bird. It's supposed to let the feathers release naturally. I'll let you know how and if it works.
I've lost nine pounds since Jan 1. No dieting. Nada. Just using the Instant Pot pressure cooker I got myself for Christmas.

It cooks so quickly and keeps all the taste and vitamins. I can make bone broth in one hour. 3# bones, fish, chicken, pork or beef. Water. That's it. I made chicken bone broth for the first time recently and used one cup of the broth as the liquid for my beef stew. The taste was insane. I decided to open a restaurant. True story!! Talking to my daughter Jenny about how much money we could make on this great food, she stopped smiling after a while. Then said "Let's take a ride." So we did to the ER. She told them " I'm a nurse and seeing signs of Manic Depressive Disorder with delusions of grandeur. " I smiled and took it. No arguing with the white coats. They had me tested and in therapy in a couple of days. Turns out, yes, I made the decision to bump down my depression medicine to the dose I had it before Aimees suicide. Wrong decision. Shouda waited for the Dr. It made me very happy and enthusiastic and "I'm gonna be rich".

Now, back to normal, I'm not going to be RICH, but the idea is sound and workable and I'm looking into it. Later. Too much on my plate for a while. Besides, who needs money? I'm starting with the catfish pond idea and going from there. If it works, okay.

Blood rings in shipped eggs are not your standard "blood ring" due to bacteria. Most of the time, blood rings In shipped eggs are the embryo trying to attach and it can't because of the damage. Any eggs that are showing development I would keep till day 18. Then you can pull whatever eggs are clearly dead. If you're not sure and they don't smell bad then leave them. I've even had a surprise hatch in an egg I swore was dead...so it does occasionally happen. There's nothing more you can do now except hope for the best! The only advice I would give you, is around day 18/19, take a pencil or marker and trace the air cells. This way you will know if the chick pips into the air cell or if it's pipped directly into the membrane (which may need assistance). Also you can stop turning around day 16. Because of the weird (saddle) shapes of the air cells, the chick can have a hard time finding the right position. I give them an extra couple days at the end without turning, in hopes that they will get into position. I've had batches that needed assistance and ones that didn't. Please keep us posted at hatch time!

great info! Some of this I have seen too. Hatching eggs are a gamble. I hope the hatch goes well.

Happy Birthday my love. Hope you didn't spend it at the hospital. I haven't used the caps tools yet but I have 4 culls right now guess I'll wait till I have your Devine guidance . My aunt visited me from Texas and she brought eggs back. So if you still have your bator I'll give you eggs to take home.
