"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hi Pam! I have a small backyard flock...just girls. I would love to add a light Sussex, Barnevelder, black and copper Maran, blue laced red wyndottes, and a cream Americana. I found someone hatching blue laced reds and I have seen black and copper Marans around. Let me know how hatching goes! If the lite Sussex do well I would love to purchase some and I can meet it pick up! Thank you!

Hope everyone is above water this morning!

I got some pics yesterday of the birds.

First, the honas! Pam, look how nicely he's filled out.

Just the sweetest, funniest little thing. Every time I open the door he tidbits and dances for me. That's what he's doing here.

And he loves his hen SO much. He always sleeps as close to her as possible.

Lagertha with her three babies. She did ok for her first time. She hopped off the nest with four eggs left, one zipping (died) and three whole. I put them in the bator and one hatched, one is working on it, and one is a dud. She had also kicked a healthy baby out of the nest; luckily I found it and put it back under her.

Three of the bricks I got from Terri.

I think I'll separate them into a breed pen once I get the fencing up at the new coop.

They're looking good, all of them!

Do you all vaccinate your chicks/chickens for Marek's? If you do, do you vaccinate any chicks hatched by a hen? I really don't know if I should vaccinate or not. Has anyone here in Louisiana had Marek's? Thank you.

Sorry haven't heard of him. If it went well for your bubby you shoul be fine. What breed are you looking for? Pam

Honestly I would like to add a little color to my eggs, looking for araucana or possibly Easter eggers. Really want to get some green/blue eggs. Do you know of anyone near the Lafayette/BR area?

Not off the top of my head. I have crested cream legbars they lay blue, and Isbars that lay all different shades of green from mint to olives . I could hatch some for you in my next hatch. I also have Easter eggers which are ee hen X legbar roo. They are smaller than hatchery eggers but lay the same size eggs. Pam

I've heard of people who have had it. All the birds I have were vaccinated as chicks. I haven't done vaccinatetions yet but I'm looking into it. Always when you get a new bird quarenteen for 30 days. Away from your flock. This is good bio-security . Merricks has a high and fast mortatally rate. Pam

Pam, thank you for answering. I understand the initial part of vaccinating but what do you do with a broody hen when she hatches chicks? This is what confuses me. Do you vaccinate them. Do you take them away and never allow a hen to raise chicks? Ugh!

You can vaccinate at any age. It's not do it as a chick or you missed the boat. Hope this gives you your answer. Also say you vaccinate for foul pox that just gives you a better chance they won't get it . It doesn't mean they are protected for life. Pam

thanks for the welcome ;)

were mostly interested in ducks at this point. but open minded to anything that lays interesting eggs. (like olive eggers)
do you have a list?

i think next batch going into our incubator will be more of what we currently are hatching, plus some black copper marans, and cucko marans. wed love to put some olive eggers in there but havent found any locally yet

in non bird related plans, if anyone knows where we can get some KuneKune or American Guinea Hogs, let me know. also magnolia trees, tea tree, coconut palm, and banana tree. (currently have pomegranate, avacado, and blood orange)

I have Isbars they lay every color of green from mint to olive. I have French black copper. Marans and olive eggers. Pam

Been a min since I've had a chance to get on here. Hope everyone is safe with all the flooding. Figured I might as well post pic of some of my latest hatches.
