"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Does anyone here provide the service of slaughtering chickens that are grown by me on my small hobby farm? I would like to get certified and get the exemptions  small farm is allowed and I spoke with the inspector from the LA Dept. of Agriculture and Forestry yesterday and she said that she would come out and inspect my place for free and give me consultation. The thing is I know I will have to build an eviscerating building to code and I am not in the right position money wise to do so as of yet. I plan on saving up money from selling the chickens I do raise and sell to manufacture such a building.

I don't think anyone here can help with that. We are mostly hobbiest.

Do any of y'all have guineas? I ended up with 3 of them about a month ago. Yesterday I found their nest out in the woods with a broody hen sitting on 17 eggs. I chased her off the nest and collected the eggs. Folks on the guinea thread said she probably will not go broody again this late in the year. Does that hold true down here or more up north?

I would take the eggs if they weren't set on already.we have one lone male and no others

Did you eat the barbs? What did you think of the meat? How well do the Niederrheiners lay? It may be my next breed to check out. My problem is when the birds are too sweet they're more like pets and I have a hard time killing/processing them. :)

I ate one the rest were sold. Not a fan of dark meat. The Neddheiderrs lay about 5 to 6 eggs a week. The Neddheiderrs are very sweet. They have great temperaments and are big so more meat on their bones. One I have my breeders I don't let the others get close like a pet. That way I can sell or process without feeling bad about it. Sorry it took me a while. This place was dead. I didn't think my post would get it going again. I'm glad everyone is posting again. Pam

I have not been on here in a few months, with things changing at home, garden season, ball season, and medical problems, I have read many of your posts about the disastrous floods in your areas, I want to let you all know I have been watching and praying for all of you and your animals, for those who escaped disaster, thank, god, to those who weren't so lucky, I feel for you and I still pray for your well being everyday.

On another note, Pam, I have now got about 11 CCL pullets and at least that many roosters, no new layers yet.

I have finally built my SLW flock up to 8 pullets, I have many CCWL pullets that are beginning to lay, second gen. their eggs are darker than the CCL

I almost forgot to mention that I now have 5 BLRWs, 5 pullets,1 roo, I expect them to start laying around Dec. or Jan.

Great to hear from you very happy to hear the CCL's have worked out for you. I hope whoever is sick has a full recovery. Pam
