"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Taking another bird to LSU vet because there's no other avian vets near. This time, it's a bleeding prolapse that won't go back in. :he
One of mine had prolapse. I put her in a cage in the house (spare bedroom with an old blanket under the cage and covering half of the to make cleanup easier and to keep her calm). Then I gently cleaned off her vent area and pushed her vent in with my gloved finger and honey. A chicken breeder told me to use honey. It took a while until it quit prolapsing, but I sat with her some and petted her and she seemed to like staying in the house. After she laid a couple of eggs in the cage and didn’t prolapse I put her back out. This was a couple of years ago and she’s been fine ever since. LSU costs a fortune. I have used them for necropsy if one died unexpectedly.

Your best bet will be a local feed store or Co-op. Have y'all looked at those?
They usually sell pullets only, but those breeds are sex-linked so shouldn't be a problem finding females.

Thanks. I got mine years ago at a feed store in Baker, but no one I’ve called has black sex link I and friends have purchased other breeds from places that say they are all female through vent checks at hatch, but we have all gotten a male through that. With the sex links it’s for sure. Could you suggest some stores that might have them that maybe I haven’t thought of? I don’t know why they are so hard to find because they are beautiful sweet laying chickens and 💯 sure to gender.

I am looking for Black or Red Star baby chicks in the South Louisiana area. My friend wants to start raising chickens but only wants 2-3 so wants to be sure they are females.
I only have 11mo Red Star pullets 😕 We ordered from My Pet Chicken, which has a 3 chick minimum in spring. They sex their chicks at hatch, and you can order just girls. If they want layers, they should check this out. We got an insurance chick, because every time we've ordered chicks at least 1 has died. We ordered 4, wanting 3, and lo and behold... all 4 were alive. Ended up with 2 RIRs and 2 Red Stars, and they're some great birds.

TSC in Denham might also have them.

Make sure your friend knows that Red Stars and other production breeds can have higher rates of reproductive issues. I just treated one for prolapse, but she's fine now.

Hope that helps!

You may get a feed store to order them, Zachary Feed does that sometimes. If you need numbers to fill out an order, let me know. The only feed store I know of in Baker is Beasley Feed, on Groom Rd. I don't know what they have but if I am out and about I may stop in there tomorow. I am waiting for a buyer to pick up the rooster, Sonny Boy, the patricidal jumping giant, and his sneaky olive egger girlfriend who is named Get Back In The Pen.

Thinkin of running my incubator again. Anyone interested in egg swapping or sellng a few.
