"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Just wanted to say a quick "hello!" I posted in the newbie forum, but wanted to pop in here, too.

I'm just starting out with chickens, so I'm sure I'll have lots of questions

My chicks are 3 weeks old and I'm racing the clock trying to get the coop finished. I'll have to post pics of my progress.

I'm excited to be here!

I lost two of my hens today too.

Over the last week or so I've gotten a little brave and started letting some of my chickens out to eat grass. I know better than to do this but thought I'd give it another try. Well, this time it was our little Schnauzer that got out of the kennel and killed two of my Ameraucanas. I have another hen that will probably die as well. I am not a very big fan of dogs and this surely doesn't help in getting me to like them.

I much prefer my geese over our dogs. The geese let me know if something or someone comes onto our property; they protect me, although, they do bite my husband

(he's a "city boy" and they know it

) ; if I wanted to make a meal out of one it would feed my whole family; and they don't kill my chickens. Of the dogs, I can say that they'd let me know if someone came onto our property; they would NOT protect me because they'd be to busy welcoming the unwanted guests; we can't eat them; and they kill my chickens. I don't think they understand that they are really pushing their luck with me!

See.. I'm with you on that.. I have over my life, been attached to just a few dogs.. the rest, are slobbering poop machines.. I do like cats, but as I have found out, even cats kill chickens (chicks).. Sooooooooo... I have Chickens and Ducks.

It also seems my 9 girls out there are hitting their stride, getting 8 eggs a day. Gonna have to call me overrun with eggs soon. Merri's got me making a sign for the front yard tomorrow.. Eggs... $2.50 / doz

Of course, I'm gonna fill up my bators before I sell eggs

I'm waiting on some eggs now, and some duck eggs.. WOOT!

It's funny but when you get into hatching the eggs you start to get stingy about what eggs go into the refrigerator to be eaten. You really start to pay attention to every egg in terms of size and quality. If the egg is VERY nice it is definitely NOT going into the frig because I want to hatch more chicks that lay that kind of egg.

I've got 3 barred rocks (one is struggling with stargazing/wry neck) and 1 RIR. I hadn't planned on getting the RIR, but she was so cute, I couldn't resist.

My plans to work on my coop this morning just got nixed. The whiny man-child woke up with what sounds like a bladder infection, so off to the doc we go. Always something!!
