I am doing the run as pictured, 8x20. I would leave the door open unless there is bad weather or something. The actual sq. footage would be 36 (counting the boxes) and the run would be 160. I see different numbers different places. One spot, it said 2 sq ft. per bird if they have run access at all times. Sigh. I think 12 would be my max anyway. We have 8 now.
I'd say if you have enough roosting space you should be fine with 12. I'd say the only "bad weather" to keep them locked up would be a hurricane. There has never been any other "bad weather" that kept my birds inside!! Feeder I would keep inside, the waterer I would put outside!!
