I have a similar question;

I have 8 birds and built my house and run for 16. When do I add my other half? I was planning for Fall. But, will it be harder? How long would I have to keep them seperate? They would be on different foods (starter vs. layer) etc.
Would it be better just to expand now, with 7-8 week old pullets, or wait?
 
I keep my young birds separated from the main flock until they are 4 months old. In fact, I'll be transitioning my Blue Orps this week (they'll be 4 months old Friday). I'll set up a pen -within -a -pen - it's actually an old crib - set up inside of the main run & let them spend the day getting to know each other through the fencing - then that night move them into the main coop so the next morning they'll all wake up together. They still have to do the pecking order thing but it does seem to go easier when I take it in stages.
 
chicks coming will be no older than 5 weeks - do I have to quarantine them - not coming from hatchery......G
 
I would quarantine any chicks coming in unless you know for sure theres no issues.

I put young birds in with my older birds all the time . Just make sure you have a bit of time to watch them to make sure no bullyin goes on.
 
Definetly add them at night. It seems to make the transition easier! And I do the same thing as Terri and add mine when their about 4 months or close enough in size that they can defend themselves if need be!!

And personally I would quarantine for 30 days before I would add new birds!
 
Was concerned about having a broody hen...I have read that some people have great difficulty before they finally get one...I am blessed...first time chicken owner and my 3rd hen is sitting on 10 eggs..she is a buff orpington .. little fizzle hatched 8 .. game hen is sitting on 12..to hatch sunday, mothers day...I have 3 hens that I know will be able to increase our flock naturally from now on.. all I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you..... am so happy to have chickens, eggs and meat for the freezer as groceries continue to rise plus all the fun of raising them...... Thank you for all the many answered questions........ G Roosters are now in bachlor pens and girls are all free ranging together (getting along great) YEA!!!!

Well, Mike is too far away for me to get chicks from.

I am looking for pullets, have a few breeds in mind, but not ruling out anything (except silkies *shudder* I think they are so creepy) and I would prefer a few weeks old. Anyone have some to sell, pm me.
