TerriLaChicks, on page 211 you show pics of the tires on your tractor. How exactly do they work? What stops them in the down position? I will be working on my tractor soon and would like to do something like that. Thanks!

TerriLaChicks, on page 211 you show pics of the tires on your tractor. How exactly do they work? What stops them in the down position? I will be working on my tractor soon and would like to do something like that. Thanks!
The wooden spokes are threaded on a long bolt that goes through the side wall of the tractor on each side. When we move it, we push up on one side of it at a time & kick the spokes back into position, lifting the tractor about 4 inches off the ground.
After we move it to a new location, we again tilt each side & kick the spokes forward, which lowers the entire thing flat on the ground.
On page 211, the top pic shows the tractor in the "down" position & the bottom pic shows it in "travel" position -- you can look closely & see it is raised slightly off the ground.
There is no floor in it, the whole thing just sits on the ground. The upper part of it is a compartment that is totally enclosed where they are locked in safely at night.
Let me know if this make sense & if not I'll try & take some more pics & explain it better.
Hope everybody is enjoying these cool mornings -- I never thought I'd be wearing long sleeves in May! NOT complaining!

Any suggestions are appreciated! I did a search for this & not finding a whole lot of solutions. I hate to go "non-organic" but I will be buying something with permethrins in it when I get off work.

TerriLaChicks - have been reading that the "Little Trees" Auto air fresheners (Vanillaroma flavor) or (Very Vanilla) really work for flies - might be worth a try on gnats....works very well in hen house etc...around porch door area also....Good luck....G

Kuntrygirl - do you suggest putting 2 setting hens in one enclosed area...game hen's 10 eggs will hatch May 8 (Sunday Mothers Day) .. Buff Orp. has 10 eggs to hatch May 17...will the two families get along in one space? Game & Buff Orp. hen? today is Thursday sure hope you read this....G Would appreciate all opinions, have any of you done this? good idea or no?

1) Depending on how close the hens are, you have the chance of 1 hen stealing the eggs from the other hen and rolling the eggs under her. This stealing activity can go on ALL day long EVERY DAY (back and forth - back and forth - back and forth) (This has happened on my little farm. The girls love to steal eggs.)
2) Once the chicks hatch, the hens may try to steal the other hen's chicks and plant them under them.
3) Once the chicks hatch, the hens may try to kill the other hen's baby chicks.
4) Once the chicks hatch, the hens themselves will fight one another in attempt to "protect" their babies. One hen may feel threatened by the other hen due to the fact that the other hen may be too close for comfort.
Just recently, I had 2 hens decide to make a nest and lay eggs on top of one of my brooders. There were too many eggs for me to move, so I decided to leave both of them where they were. Well, every day, I would check on them and I noticed that the egg count was different EVERY day. Guess what was going on? They kept stealing each other's eggs EVERY day. I then moved them in their own little brooder. Problem solved.
Once my girls hatch their babies, I allow them to stay in the nursery brooder for a couple of weeks. Then I move them to another open air raised brooder. Well, when I move them to this brooder, the mama hens try to fight one another (like roosters) between the chicken wire. They peck at one another through the wire. The mama also tries to peck the baby chicks that belong to the other mama hen. Once both families settle down and they go to their corners, it's ok. But as long as they are up and about and eating and playing, it's a circus. None of them have ever injured the other but the possibility is there. I think if there wasn't a divided wall/wire there, then there would be injuires and deaths.
With that said, I wouldn't advise you to do that if you can help it. It could lead to a massacre of eggs or chicks. I hope that this helps you a little. Keep me posted on what you do and how everything turns out.

My tom is doing good. Although, he still has wry neck, he is just as sweet as he can be. I have been researching and I read on this forum where people have given their chickens with wry neck Prednisone and the wry neck was cleared up within days. A lot of people are beginning to think that it is only an inflammatory problem because it can easily be corrected with Prednisone (a steroid). I asked the vet about it and he said that Prednisone weakens the immune system and that he wouldn't want me to give it to my Tom. So, I was like "Ok".
So, I continue to read and read and read for a cure.
