Good morning all. Did I have a day off yesterday? It surely doesn't feel like it. I worked more this weekend than I have in a long time. It was a killer day yesterday. I placed my almost 2 week old guineas in their outside brooder box. They had been under a heat lamp at 95 and then 90 degrees inside in my back room but I wanted to give them more room. The temps were in the high 70's and I knew that it would be VERY humid last night, so I let them sleep outside in their wooden brooder box (will try to take pics and post later) and inside of their soon to be pen. I guess that's the only good thing about these hot Louisiana temps. It's good for the young ones. I checked on them last night and this morning and they were fine. They were spread out all over, so it looks like they were warm in only high 70 degrees last night. That was strange.

I had more muscovy duck and chick hatches on yesterday. I found 3 more broody ducks that were hiding their nest of eggs.

I have no idea how many eggs they are setting on. I feel so sorry for them and I want them to have babies, I just can't see myself disturbing them or their nest. That's my weakness. I guess that's why I have so many hatches. And then I blame myself because I am on animal overload. I think I need an intervention.

Twiley, congrats on your new babies. I bet you're excited to pick them up.

Terri, such a beautiful pic. And you have poison ivy? Not good. I hope you're not too itchy over there. These high temps won't help with that poison ivy either. Hopefully, it will be gone soon.

Shdyldy28, about the BYC pages... I don't have one. I have a website. Just seems easier to me. You can only put so much on the BYC Pages, so I figured that I would get a website. I have to update my website with new pics or more info. I've been lazy about it though.

Can't wait to see your new coop.

I've got a question.

It always seems like I have an unending list of them lately.

I see where there are sites that will either ship you fertilized eggs or day old chicks. I don't guess I understand how they are to do this. How can they ship chicks without any food or water for them? Do they make the trip safely?

Please help me understand this concept, as just me thinking about all these little baby chicks being tortured in a box in the US mail.

Kuntrygirl, if you hatch too many Muscovys LaMike was wanting some. I wouldn't mind buying a few also. Let us know if you need to get rid of some. I have some coming sometime soon but I don't know when and I don't know how many. I'm waiting for them to hatch.

Thanks for setting my mind at ease. I was getting myself stressed out over that.

I would try and find the ones I want locally but I don't know anyone here. I've only lived here this time for a year.

Anyway, if it is for the most part ok to ship the little guys, I may trythat to begin with.

Ok, another couple of questions

1) I want to get a few wyandottes for their eggs. If all I am wanting from them is their eggs do I need a roo? Like I said I'm really new to this. I think I know the answer to this but I want to make sure before I get them.
2) When I want to get eggs for hatching from my other breeds that I'm wanting. I know to get the same breed you need a roo of that breed. But can you mix some of the breeds to get something different?

Could y'all recommend a good place to order baby chicks from? I am going to build a brooder box this weekend to put my chicks in. I've read that they need to stay in that for like 8 weeks so I figure that will give me plenty of time to get my coop built.

I found one site called mypetchicken.com. I was thinking about going with them if for no other reason I can get as little as 3 chicks. I want to start off kind of small until I know for sure that this is what I want. I am building my coop & run to accomodate as many as 20 just in case. (beacause I know how I am when I fall in love with something)

Here I go again. This one is about BYC. In the forum under your screenname there is a saying. Ex: right now, mine says new egg. How do you change that after your new status is over, to something you want?
