"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

It's been a BUSY morning so far - woke up to find 1/3 of one of our pecan trees laying across the driveway, so had to get the tractor & chains & get that out of the way before Jim could go to work. I skipped part of my work since I already had a good sweat worked up!

Now off to the shower & into town to pick up boxes at the post office to mail out some things.

Beautiful sebbies & GORGEOUS Marans!

How is everyone's chickens, this heat sucks! I wish I worked closer to my house just to go home and check on my birds on lunch break lol.

Feed is high whats new changed my gamefowl chicks to LoneStar Game Bird chick/starter, bout $17 and some change. 28% protein thought, thoughs little suckers should grow. I should have been having them on that but I still had some regular Lonestar chick starter left when they hatched a few weeks ago.

I just had the 1 heat related problem about a week ago. Other than that, all of them are ok. I have a lot of trees on my property as well as their chicken stalls, so they know to get out of the heat.

Feed is definitely high. I need to get that info to you about the type of feed and protein level so you can tell me about measurements. The price of feed has increased to as high as $3.00 more per bag. The 30% Purina gamebird feed has increased from $18.00 to $20.00 for a 50lb bag. The Arrow 28% protein gamebird feed has increased from $14.00 to $16.00. It's ridiculous. I wish I knew how to make my own feed.

A bag of cracked corn has increased to $11.00 for a 50lb bag. I can remember when cracked corn was $6.00 for a 50lb bag. Even sheep and goat feed has increased. I try to off set the price by using coupons. That helps a lot. I saved about $20.00 over the weekend with my coupons and in-store savings. Coupons are my #1 friend. The cashiers know that I use a lot of coupons, so they have gotten into the habit of asking me if I have any coupons before they even ring up my total due.

The manager will also tell me that he has some damaged bags of feed that have been reduced and will tell me where they are in the event that I want to buy them. The damage is only a hole in the bag from loading or unloading. The feed is still good. No molded or wet feed at all. I always inspect if before I leave the store.

I hope the prices go down soon.

Yeah it hasn't been a good year for pecan trees here at all! this was one of the younger ones in front, too, I guess it's just been so dry it just cracked. Not many pecans on it either, I noticed.

Feed prices sure are higher. I pay $15 for Purina Layena pellets & $17 for gamebird flight conditioner which is what I feed my peacocks & my younger birds.

I think I'm spending a couple hours a day putting out extra water these days -- they sure do appreciate it though, and (knocking on wood) I haven't had any fatalies to the heat so I know it helps. When I let them out to range they head straight for the muscadine vines & the fig trees & hole up underneath in the shade until sundown.

Lafayette, Indiana's kinda far to go even for free sand!
