It's been raining non stop all night. It'll start raining really hard then it slacks off!! I'm thinking about going out there and let mine out for the day! Everyone take care out there!!

I just opened the coops and all of mine are out. I'm sure yours will LOVE this weather.

Have a restful sleep.

Good morning! let all of mine out too. Wish it would just stay like this a few days, just a light steady rain & cool. I just know as dry as the trees have been, as soon as this breeze picks up a bit more we will have tree limbs through electrical wires and Bingo! no electricity. Happens every time & takes forever for them to get it back on. Thank goodness for generators!

Everybody stay safe & dry!

Stay safe, everyone!

I'm really glad to have a RIR/ee roo now! Hoping to get some Olive eggers or green eggers hatched out this year(There are Marans and ee hens in the tractor). This was sweet luck!

I talked with an old timer today who explained the egg assembly line to me.He detailed the life of an an egg from time of fertilization, to actually being laid and told me it takes 28 days. Does this sound right?

It takes approx. 26 HRS. for an egg to go thru the assbly. line

Ok Maybe I misunderstood the ? here's the part I answered underlined and in italics. The taking of 28 days is way out there to me as there are a lot of factors involved that is way deep science as far as that goes. As far as when the actual egg drops from the ovary into the infundibulum to the time its laid is 26 hrs. as far as from when its fertilized may be less than that I don't have my info in front of me know of exactly the time that the ova is fertilized but it is early on in the "assembly line" that fertilization takes place, not way back in the ova developmental stage in the ovary.

Jeff

I see where this was headed I think is how long can the eggs be fertile, maybe? The hen can hold the semen and it be viable for up to 3 to 4 weeks(28 days) that's pretty much a (given) standard in the poultry world, but it really can be longer than that sometimes or shorter too. If newer (fresh semen is introduced) like say from another rooster it will most probly be the new semen that fertilizes the egg as the little swimmers are more viable and active than the older stored semen. Its a very deep subject but interesting one if one is enthused to study.

Here's an example of how long a hen can store semen from another rooster and it still "crop out" later on

Go down to the 7th pic. posted of the rooster named "Cull" and read of his how-abouts (history) of coming into existence. Pretty neat I think.

Oh yes, I agree they do. Yeah, a hen is born with all the thousands of egg germ cells that she might could possibly lay in her life-time.

Probly one of the reasons one ovary disappears (absorbed by the chicks body) soon after it is hatched, could you imagine having twice as many available egg cells that could possibly develop into eggs? Heck that ol' gal would have to live to be a hundred or so so lay all those eggs.

Jeff

Or laying 2 of those things a day, she'd prolly be hollern' for someone to bring the preparation-H after a few weeks of that, things might get a little swollen and uncomfortable with-out much healing time between rounds, I'd reckon.

It has been pounding here pretty much constantly since last night.Kinda light right now. Saw some boats sunk in the harbor already.Got some pics for ya,but I have to go upload them right quick... Water is pretty high right now and sitting on low tide.Once high tide comes in,most roads will be impassable. Can't even see most of the beach. The surf has come up.Can't wait to see what it looks like at high tide....

I just woke up from my nap. It's still raining. I need to go out and do a walk thru and check on everyone just because. Need to make sure no one floated away. The ducks were standing at attention when I went out this morning to open the coops. They along with the geese are loving this rain.

WOW post those pics!! It's been constant here. Like I said before it'll starting pounding hard then all of a sudden slow down to a drizzle and then start pounding again!! One thing I have no fear of is flooding. We're on an incline sorta so everything moves straight down the driveway!! Driving home this morning was rough. All of a sudden boom you hit a HUGE puddle that felt like your car came to a stand still.
