Beautiful birds. You definitely have a Cornish. That is the first thing I said when I saw it. Where did you get the Cornish from? How did you end up with those?

People usually process the Cornish at 8 weeks or so because they end up with leg problems, heart attacks, etc. It's not a breed that a person usually keeps around but it's not impossible for them to live longer.

Thank you All of these came from TSC, I chose them from the bantam pen but after I paid for them I was told they were straight run, the sales lady insisted that was their breed

an old man that was there at the time told us that 5 of them were white rock pullets and the 6th one was a RIR (refering to the red star) Mind you I knew better BUT have never raised chicks before so still wasn't sure what they were. I hate to hear that about the Cornish though Red and CF are my chickens the others are my kids chickens

I love Red so much the two of them are the most friendy chickens I have ever had. When I go to feed them every morning Red comes over for me to pick him up, he flops onto his back in my arms and patiently waits to have his belly scratched. If I don't pick him up he'll lay over on my feet and stretch his legs out and won't move until I itch his legs

I didn't teach him to do this he just started doing it. My kids are always cracking jokes that Red is a fat lazy chicken that can't fly and that there aren't wings big enough in the world to get Red of the ground lol I have been getting more and more worried about him lately though because he will hardly walk anywhere. He only gets up and walks if he absolutely HAS to and even then he will only walk about 2-3 foot before he flops down and acts like he's ran a marathon. I built an add-on to my pen so that they would have more room, I thought maybe he just needed some more exercise. I cut back on his food and nothing is working. I hate to have to send him to freezer camp but I don't want him to suffer either

When do the chicks start to feather out?

They will be fully feathered at around 4 weeks old some maybe 5 but enough that they will be able to handle the cool nights(60's) around here. Their first few weeks is the most critical time for the temps to be steadier, its not the golden rule but a good one to have. Start them at 90-95 and drop it each week by 5* the first 3 weeks then by the fourth they can be weaned to deal with the daily mid 80-low 90s as of now. should be no biggie.

Terri glad you got the pesky varmint. I can see why you might have an over load of critters there too you live in a animal garden of Eden with all those pecan trees, fig trees and your garden I'm sure, and right in the middle of a bean field. Why, its a wonder your place doesn't look like one of those scenes out of Africa or somewhere with wildlife all scattered over a savanna. LOL

You must've overlooked the citrus trees, lol! Thank you for the compliment. Our land has been in my family well over 100 years. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else!

Terri I did miss the citrus I guess was trying to absorb up a lot in a short time, I reckon ,lol
The boys are good and those girls are so pretty now, the boys will get there soon they still have that gangly, lanky, teenager look to them right now, but they should be pretty good size boys when they grow into all those legs.

We have 5 acres and feel so blessed, I can't imagine 100 with all those trees!
