"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hi everyone! I'm lovin all the duck and pea pics.  My friends were changing the water in their duck pond every day or so, and I suggested Duckponics. They looked at me like I was crazy, then actually built the darn thing :D
The plastic grow bed was the original pond. They drained it, and dug another pond next to it (they moved the old pond outside the fence to keep all of the birds/goats out of it.

In this pic, you can see that the ducks/geese have it stirred up, but you can still see the bottom. Its knee deep there.

additional solids filter.

Clear water!

The gravel bed is a piece of floating dock that my pal salvaged, and the swirl filter is an old swimming pool filter that I salvaged from a pool shop dumpster. He built a bell siphon in the bed that fills/drains every 15 minutes. When the swirl filter gets loaded up with solids, one can just oped the valve at the bottom and clear it.

Amazing!

Good morning everyone. I hope everyone is doing well this morning. I don't know if the mosquitoes are over populated in your area but they are in mine. I had been spraying Skin So Soft by Avon and that was helping with the mosquitoes but I forgot to spray for a few days and the mosquitoes tore up my baby turkeys. They don't look to good. I washed them down last night with saline solution and put ointment on their scabs. I sprayed them down very well last night and will continue to spray for the entire summer. I just ordered (2) 24 oz bottles from one of my customers who sells Avon and I will be ordering another (2) 32 oz bottles (on Sale for $9.99 at this time). Please be careful out there with those mosquitoes everyone . I forgot how bad they can be and the damage. I know it's too late to get the vaccine but I am DEFINITELY getting the vaccine next year. I have never lost any birds yet and I don't want to. I have open/air coops, so that doesn't help. For those of you that have closed chicken houses or coops, YOU ARE LUCKY. You don't have to worry too much about mosquitoes getting in there.

Missi, keep an eye on your baby turkeys. Mine look horrible!

On a lighter side, I had 1 (yes, I said ONE) duckling to hatch on yesterday. I had a broody duck that I felt sorry for, so I put 4 duck eggs under her. I now have the baby duck inside with the baby pea chick. I hope no more ducklings hatch. :hide I will put the baby back with her so that she can enjoy her baby.

One more week before lock down for the pea eggs. I am on pins and needles. :fl

Have you tried vanilla extract drops in water in a spray bottle...or a fresh orange squeezed in water in a spray bottle? It won't hurt the birds and we have had great results repelling mosquitos with the mixture. I don't know how something that sweet smelling repels them, but it works!

I use to have vanilla air fresheners :hide in the coops and it seemed to work. I forgot all about that. Thanks for the reminder. Do you know what the ratio of vanilla extract or squeezed orange to water is? I will try it tonight. :thumbsup

for the vanilla, about 1 tbs per cup of water, but it does depend on how strong the extract is, you can add more if needed. For the orange, you can use lemons too, I just use 1/2 of the fruit squeezed in per cup of water. Good luck!!

Oh, if anyone is having problems with flies, you can try rosemary or catnip, also mint, basil or bay leaves are good. It's better if you have a living plant and grow it near the coops or pens, the dried herbs never worked for us, and just make sure the animals can't get it or they might eat your fly repellent!

Thanks. I will try it and let you know. I'll spray myself too. :lau
