"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I put white sand down in my coops and love it. I don't see why river sand would not work.

Chris
I'm trying to get a price on a load of sand as well. I'm sure mine are looking like a swamp right now.

And Chris, I will be in Carencro on Sunday if you want to meet up. I can also do Saturday afternoon if that works better for you. Let me know!

yes the sand will work great and I know exactly what your going thru over there in that silty/gumbo mess when its wet and contains chicken castings LOL pee-yew-we. I am fortunate enough over here in Vernon parish to have sandy loam as a base soil all I have to do ever so often is do a good clean out straight to the garden spot and I'll some times add in some pine sawdust I get free from the local saw mill it helps in the winter time with the damp stuff plus it add a cosistencey to the garden mix, you can grow rocks in this stuff here LOL

I am also a convert to sand in the coops -- have it in the grow out pen & 1/2 the chicken run & plan on adding it to the rest of that area

My guineas came back! they not only were back when I got home from work, the silly things even had flown back over the fence into the chicken yard! All are where they're supposed to be tonight!
thanks Julie for setting my mind at ease; I knew when you said they'd come back you were going to be right!

We made out fine. A ton of wind and rain last night, we got slammed all night, but all in all not bad for us. We lost power yesterday around 1 pm and we just got it back at 1:35 pm today. I'm here with 3 women (wife, mother in law and grandmother-in -law) and 2 little ones (mine and my wife's 10yr old sister). It's been interesting being the only guy around but really not bad at all. One of the horses coliced last night and we were up until 3:30am in the wind and rain pumping fluids in her but she is doing great now. All the chickens are fine and did what they were suppose to do, lol!

Chris

Glad to see you fared well. I wish we were as quick to get power back. We lost power at 1am Tuesday night, and have been running a generator at my Pawpaw's house since then. We have 9 of us staying here to have some power and a/c. My chickens mostly fared well, though my brooder area, 4-wheeler shed, and some of my tack room have been destroyed. I think I am only missing one hen, chicken coops are intact, but a mess. Hoping the house we are about to put in an offer on fared as well! I can't wait to get some power so we can get back home and clean up.

Its like a swamp in my chicken coop right now. Was thinking bout putting down 3 to 4 inches of river sand down on the floor of the coop to keep it dry and to keep the smell down when it rains. Cause the smell is unreal after a good rain even though i keep it as clean as possible.  Do yall think that would be a good idea?

That is a great idea. I have been using sand in my runs for years and I love it. I wouldn't use anything else.

Glad to hear that they came back. LOL @ the silly things had flown back over the fence. Gotta love those guineas. :)

Holy cow did we get hammered this morning! A good 7-8 inches & all at once! Lost power & it just came back on. (knocking on wood) - weather map looks like we still have a few t-storms left to pass over us yet.

The bayou is over the banks down the road from us but road is still passable & we're on slightly higher ground so doing OK. TBJumper hope you get some power back soon!
The rooster is crowing his head off. I think he's protesting all this rain!

Whoo!!! there went another big limb down -- we have some serious yard cleanup to do if this ever stops -- LOTS of limbs & branches down, thank goodness no trees.

Oh Terri. Sorry to hear about the weather over there. Glad that your power is back on. Sounds like you will be busy cleaning your yard. Good luck and be careful.

Less than 2" of rain over here in Avoyelles Parish. Chickens came through fine. In regards to flooring in the chicken coop, I use wood chips because my town has mountains of the stuff for free from when the town used to chip up fallen limbs. It's probably not as good as sand, but you can't argue with free!

We used wood chips in our chicken tractor for a couple years. We really liked it, but it would get expensive for the large area I have to cover now.
