Lovable Ducks Contest.

It sounds like a lot, but it's really not so many. As far as how many ducks I have at home with me right now I only have one Blue Swedish whose 5 weeks old. My Anconas are all in the form of eggs in my bator right now, and my Welsh Harlequins, and Buffs are being shipped to me next week from Metzer Farms. I ordered 5 of each breed, so ten. However, I only got two of each breed (welsh, and buff) sexed. So I ordered two female harlequins, two female Buff, and then 3 straight run of both of those breeds. I'm keeping two of the welshies, and one buff but I figured if I was going to order ducklings like that I may as well get my money's worth out of it! between minimum orders, extra packing fees, and shipping price (you have to pay a minimum fee of $36 when you order whether you order 2 ducks or 6) so I was going to get six, but then found out that if I ordered ten instead, then I wouldn't have to pay the $12 minimum bird fee. It's confusing but in the end I got 10 ducklings for $71.00 when I would have gotten six of them for $69.00 because of extra minimum fees.
So, basically I have seven ducklings to sell next week! I'd love to sell them to BYC members but I can't ship them, so it's local pick up only.

If I were anywhere near Utah, I'd come pick up a duck! I only want one more, and I don't know where I'll find one, single duck. I suppose farm supply stores carry them sometimes, but I haven't seen any lately. Plus, I'd rather get one that was hatched in a home instead of a mass-producing hatchery. But good luck placing the ducklings!

The vet called today and confirmed that my duckling is a girl. So, I now have a little baby named Bunny.

Thanks! I'm hoping that I'll be able to sell them relatively quickly, so they can get settled in their new homes at a younger age. And yay! to getting a girl! I love the name Bunny, and was considering using it as well.

I'm keeping three out of my order, so I'm thinking I'll name them Harley and Piglet (Buff Orp.) and Oasis (Welsh Harlequin) and then once my Ancona babies hatch, I can continue the "pig" theme with Wilbur, or Babe.

Hey all, I've been following a few threads with Duckling contests, and since it's always fun to see everybody's pictures I want to start one up too. There won't be a prize, just bragging rights. We'll have three categories: Ducklings, Drakes, and hens. I'll pick my favorite three out of each category on June 13th (that's a Wednesday I believe)

OK, this is Welshie, my Welsh Harlequin duck. She is a little over a year and just hatched out her first batch of chicks. Our waterfowl were attacked by a dog last year and she and a female runner duck were the only survivors so I don't have any drakes old enough to breed. She decided to adopt a clutch of chicken eggs.

Oh that is so cute - chicks and a duck! I had a hen hatch out a ducking and my kids were so puzzled about why the duckling thought the hen was its mother. Your duck will be sad when she tries to get those chicks to take a bath . . .

Yes, I actually already did. These are the five Welsh Harelquin ducklings we added on. Mama Welshie isn't quite sure what she thinks of them. They've been free ranging while she's been broody. She always stops to watch them when she comes out for a drink or whatnot, but she never looks like she can quite figure out quite what to do about them. Anyway, here are the ducklings.

They're cute. I like how one of them is looking up at the sky. We have seagulls, and planes pass over my house pretty regularly, and my Swedish always seems to be the first to spot anything in the sky. Actually earlier this week she was spending some time in her kiddie pool, and I was sitting next to it watching since she has a hard time climbing out right now, I saw her starring up at the sky, and she went really quiet. So I look up, and realize that she has spotted a hawk! there turned out to be two of them, AND I found out that my mom's bantam chicks were outside. So luckily Blue saved the day being so keen eyed.

That's awesome! It definitely helps having alert poultry. I love my guinea fowl because nothing comes close to my property without us knowing about it. Of course, they're mostly complaining about jays or our dog, but we've never lost anyone to a hawk and I watch them play in the updraft over our property. Sometimes they circle and check out chicks if I have them out in a tractor, but they can't get to those.

I always worry when they're this size: big enough to want to be out but still smaller than a rabbit.

Nice to have an early warning system huh?

Blue Belle is five weeks old, but compared to other breeds I've had I feel like she's growing slowly. She seems really small to me for her age.

Which makes me worry more, since she's small, and the only duck outside in the Duck run. I'll definitely feel better when she's grown more, and has more duckies outside to hang out with her.
