I’m new here! I have been wanting chickens for quite a while and my 20 year old twin daughters decided to just do it. We built an area that is 8’ x 16’ total. The north 4’ x 8’ section is the coop which is 2’ off the ground, 2”x2” roosts along with a branch stuck in there that they like best. The other 8’x12’ section is a 6’ tall run and they can get under the coop as well for shade. I started with five 3/4 Japanese Bantam/Old English cross and one buff Silkie. Upon reading I see that Japanese Bantam are poor layers at about one per week. I went to a local poultry auction and got five Red Sex Link chicks.
I just love my flock! At least two of my five Jap cross are roosters.
. I can’t wait to see some eggs! We still have a few months to wait. The first ones are 11 weeks and the Sex Link are 5 weeks. I have just put them all together and they are happy! I have one Rabbit also in there that thinks he is a chicken, I think.
If the Silkie gets wet in the rain, I wrap him/her in a towel, rock him in front of the TV and feed him strawberries.
I would love to get a Polish and a Frizzle!
I live in SW Missouri with my husband, 20 year old twin daughters who are in college, 2 long hair dachshunds, and two rescue cats. We have raised garden beds filled with mushroom dirt that have done wonderful the past couple of years. I play piano and my husband leads mus in and we host monthly Hymn Sings for our community.
Most of my internet search chicken questions have led me to this website. I look forward to sharing with you all!
