Hi my name is Debbie,

i breed and raise orpingtons, i just love the nature, the look, the personalities of them, plus the friendly approach. i have had several breeds in my back yard, over the past few years, and after seeing the orpington breed decided to get rid of all my mixed breeds and stick to the orpington, so i have started with a beautiful big blue rooster who i have named Henry as he is like a king, and have gone from there. I have tried to research about the breed but cannot find anywhere where it talks about the eye colour, all my birds i have raised from Henry's in put, (eggs) have beautiful big brown eyes, and eggs i have had bought in to incubate have a slightly different colour some of them, which makes me wonder if they have been crossed at some stage, which leads me back to my question, do the orpingtons due to their characteristic meant to have big brown eyes????
I look forward to hearing from anyone who can help me.

Welcome to BYC! I have had many Orpingtons over the years and love them for all of the reasons that you just listed. I have become more utilitarian in my later years and have reduced the once large number of breeds in my flock primarily to breeds that lay really well (with a few Easter Eggers thrown in because my granddaughter loves the colored eggs). Even though my Black Sex Links and Black Australorps outlay them, I still have four Buff Orpingtons, just because they are so beautiful, personable, and friendly (and they are good layers as well). As for their eyes, all of my Orpingtons have had brown (or copper colored) eyes. Good luck with your Orpingtons.

Welcome to BYC!

Orpingtons sure are wonderful birds! I love their calmness and sweet personalities.

Enjoy your wonderful flock and welcome to ours!

I wonder if brown eyes are required in the standard of perfection, for the various allowable colors.

I know there are chocolate orps, and lavender etc. etc. I would think they eye color would differ.

I used to breed show cockers and generally they had brown eyes but, the chocolate colored (liver)

individuals have a lighter eye & chocolate color to the nose. Other colors have black noses.

I think orps are beautiful regardless of color. My friend had to rehome Buffy the hen, when Buffy morphed into a rooster. She/he was a very sweet bird.

You could go to the Breeds forum - there is a side tab (right side) that is re: standard, genetics, etc. Someone would probably best be able to answer the eye color question. Or if you search for the Orpington thread and ask there.
