Hello!

My kids and I recently set up a nice spot in our backyard for 3 hens. We did our research, got a nice coop and all the necessities. We got 3 sex-linked reds (I think that is what they are called). We got them in June and they were about 5-6 months old. Within the last week, we started getting 3 beautiful eggs every day! We were so excited. We made sure they always had fresh food and water. Sadly, one of girls died suddenly yesterday. So I am here trying to find answers. My son (9) is devastated because it was his first pet! Looking forward to learning more about raising our girls!

Hi and welcome to BYC. In the absence of knowing any symptoms, it is not possible to even hazard a guess, but sorry for your loss.

You'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/category/learning-center.11/ and if you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread#post_3239224

Sorry for your loss.

Maybe it was too hot? That's the most usual reason this time of year.

None of them have odd breathing sounds or pale combs or weird-looking eyes? If so, they're probably not sick, and I would invest in a few icepacks to drop in your waterer.
That is a great idea about the ice! I can add ice cubes in the meantime! We are new to raising chickens and so I didn't notice any changes in the comb or eyes. They did seem hot (laying down with mouths open). So I added fresh cold water and hosed the coop down to make the ground cold and damp. They seemed to like this because they all got up and started scratching. About an hour after that one died! :(

No problem!!!

Did you have any recent pictures before she passed?
