I grew up on a farm. We raised hogs, cattle, had some riding horses and chickens. I moved away about 20 years ago and have always missed it. Well, bought 2 1/2 acres just inside the Jefferson County line in Kentucky. Love it. Got me some chickens and ducks!

Now, when I was a kid, we had 20-50 chickens at any given time. We threw them some ground corn, lots of veggie and meat scraps and they free-ranged where ever they wanted, ate leftover pig feed and drank out of the dogs water or puddles. They laid their eggs in the hen house, unless they were brooding and then they just went out in the high weeds and came back in a few weeks with 6-20 baby chicks. We always had 2-4 dogs and they kept all the varmints away. So, from what I remember, raising chickens is easy, right?

So when did raising chickens become so difficult. I don't remember "pasty butt" or any chickens getting lethargic. Never put meds in their water or even apple cider vinegar. They just "were." So, since chickens have become such primadona's, I find myself on here frequently. I figured I might as well become a member. I do know that I feel that my girls and boys (and my ducks) are more pets than we used to consider them. But I'm having a bunch of fun and so is my "green" husband and my grandchildren. So I will be here quite frequently looking for answers. (right now I have a lethargic pullet.)
