Love this site

Thanks all for the warm welcome. Today was very cold so Brenda spent most of the day inside on facebook while Hatchi (my favorite K-9) and I cleared a bunch of scrub brush from our fence line so we can establish a permanent asparagus site. The area was (is) 12' x 125'. We have LOTS of Georgia clay just below the top soil and I have recently read that asparagus roots will tap as much as 8 to ten feet deep. Now that the scrub brush is cleared I will crank up the back hoe and work the soil to at least 8' while adding and mixing lumas, silt and mulch to the clay.

For the past three days I have been looking for a good place to place our coop or chicken tractor. At the back of our property we have established pine trees. Some as thick as 2' in diameter. The undisturbed pine straw is almost a foot deep and the undergrowth is slight. From what I have read here at BYC, Pine straw is a great medium for a run connected to my soon to be built Chicken tractor.

We met another neighbor, Martin, who is quite young (late 20's early thirty's) and filled with ambition. He took right to us and offered to contribute additional muscle to some of my projected plans. Behind his back Brenda and I often refer to him as "Zeb". He seems to be a great and sincere kid.

Linwood (aka Mr. Ziffel) tells me that Zeb rented his home about two years ago and seems to be a good addition to the area. Almost all our plans are in the early stages: it's rather exciting for Brenda and I.

One of our plans is to raise about fifteen layers to reap about 100 eggs per week. We know nothing about which type of hens we should get. BYC advice is needed here for sure. I am hopeful I can find the right thread to the right forum for such advice
