Our very first chickies were delivered in June. We currently have 5 Aracaunas (lost one baby right away) and 6 Gold Links. My husband's family raises chickens for meat but this is our first experience with egg layers. We also have 2 dogs who get along just fine with the chickens. They've learned what it means to "check the chickies" and our pit bull, Henna, helps round the girls up at night. She points toward them and chases them back to the coop but never touches them.

I found BYC when we were first considering getting chickens. I found lots of great info here but never posted. I am posting now because one of my Araucanas froze into the snow, pulled out all her tummy feathers that were stuck and now has big blister bubbles in between her toes. More info and a pic is posted under "Emergencies, etc." under the topic "Chicken frozen in snow" I have already received some really helpful advice and I really appreciate having a community of knowlegable and experienced people like this to help out. Thank you so much!!!

Welcome! I'm glad you're enjoying chicken ownership so far! It really is a lot of fun, and very enjoyable.

It's great you got advice here before getting your chickens!

My three dogs all know what "Let's go check on the chickies!" means, too!

Thanks everyone! We're in Northern Minnesota and our chickens free ranged in the summer and fall...we open up their little door when the weather is "warm" here (above 20F) but there is still 2 feet of snow everywhere...their coop is on the south side of a garage, so they get a little bit of bare ground to hand out on. I'm going to look into some designs for sheltered runs for next winter and try to figure out a temporary plan for the rest of this winter (which lasts until April here!).
