I grew up around chickens as a kid. We used them for meat and eggs. I also had the opportunity to clean during butcher time. )-:

My fiancé and I decided that we wanted to raise chickens for meat, eggs, and pets. It started when I brought home two chicks during Easter. I am a school counselor and students had the opportunity to watch chicks hatch. Our staff divided them up to take home. Our business began as soon as I got home.

There has been a chicken explosion at my house. (-:
We have started with 7 barred rock, 6 red sex links, 4 guineas, 3 cornish rock, and around 25 bantam cochins (buffs, frizzles, mille fleurs).

We did have 4 turkeys but they died. Something new to deal with. We are not sure what happened. We called the owner of the feed store and he was shocked. He thought they were healthy. After the first one died, he gave us two top hats and a white guinea. We have not contacted him about the other 3. I have plans to that today.

I found out about BackYardChickens.com by searching for information on the web. I love this site. There is soooo much great information.

I enjoy cooking and reading. My fiancé and I enjoy cooking outside, hanging at the pool and lately watching our chickens every evening and weekend mornings.

We have 4 dogs. Our black mouth cur is the only one we trust around the birds. The others are chomping at the bits including my Pekingese. We have an occasional cat when she decides to visit. She does not bother the chickens which is great.

We just added a 3 month old Boer goat. We also plan to raise and sell them. So we have become very busy bees. I am looking forward to all the new information coming my way via BYC.

Please beware of family dogs that massacre the chicks/chickens. We hear about it over and over and over, when greeting new members. The chickens don't stand a chance. You never hear of a flock of chickens killing a dog.

I don't know. I think if you let a flock that size develop a taste for dog they may turn the tables! Mine have started on my labrador's nose twice.

All kidding aside, dd is right. A dog massacre can happen in a blink. Be very careful with so many dogs around.

That must be quite a show with all those birds doing their thing. Thanks for joining BYC!
