In our coop we use pine shavings and have a three foot square sand box by the pop door to help dry out wet feet. Some of the birds love dust bathing in the sand so much we picked up an old tire at mavis and filled it with sand. Theres 200 lbs of sand in this tire and i mixed in poultry dust .

I'm thinking I'll give this a go, I have quite a few old tires the previous owner of the property "gifted" me. I dumped sand down in the run previously, but it just incorporated itself into my clay when wet soil.

I read that some chickens love sand and some ignore it, so i figuered this way it wont get soaked in the rain and it would be cleaner. Its really heavy to put in a raised coup too. I stirred in the garden and poultry dust.

Mine seem to love at least digging down into the dirt and sanding a tiny bit. We looked at the tide tables for tomorrow so are going to the beach with our dogs to collect the sand. As the tides are perfect after 11AM perfect meaning we will know how much of the beach is driveable and don't have to worry about our road in getting flooded. Also sunny and 82 will be a nice break from this cool front that saw us turning the heater on.

Trying, that bombogenesis is scary
Well the dogs enjoyed it and the beach was quite driveable we were looking across the river at Mexico before we even realized we had made it that far. We filled up a coleman cooler but it wasn't 200 pounds as my wife and I managed to get it in the back of the car. Guess I'll find a smaller tire and give it a go.

it's amazing how much sand a tire can hold so when you place it, do it thinking of where it will live forever - ours took 4 sandbags that were over 50 lbs each to fill the insides and up to the top - I mixed in the poultry dust every few inches when we poured it in - glad the beach was great - any pics?
