New chicken mom here. I have four RIR and a very gentle large and tall game rooster. The hens have lots of feathers missing and flight feather breakage which looks like other pics and discussions about overmating.
I am in the coop and yard a lot and I don’t see him mating but a few times a day. One hen makes it very easy for him and she has the most missing feathers.
I have separated him now for the last several weeks but it’s so sad and he acts depressed. I have more hens coming to balance the ratio.
Is it possible that his large size is a problem? Should I choose larger hens or game hens or does rooster size even matter? I’m afraid to add new hens and have the same thing happen to them as well.
Two of the hens I got already had bare spots and I was told they were molting, but now that I am learning and reading it definitely looks more like I bought hens with feather damage as a result of over mating.
Of course he prefers the mating with two bare hens over the two that are full of feathers.
thank you!
