Lucky new girls...just before the next snow arrived

We ended up with ice on top of the snow. By 7:00pm Friday, the power when down and stayed out until Noon Sunday. (7000 homes in the county were without.) So, no supplemental light until today However the new girls are steadily rising on egg production - at 10/day (50%) for Sunday and today.

Here's a pic of the accummulated snow & ice on Sat morning:

Alas, I lost my 42 eggs in the incubator during the power outage.

Is that you, Lee?

Ahhh, it's OK. I reset the incubator today to level off and will start new eggs by the weekend. And I have hatchery chicks coming in next week as well. There will still be babies of the right age when your coop is ready.

Thanks for your email. I'll send you a reply when I finish catching up tomorrow. Today I went through a bunch of business email, caught up phone messages, & helped DH get website orders out that couldn't be packed/shipped Friday.

Yes, it's me.

So glad you are going to load the bator again. We are expecting more snow, wind, ice, etc. this week starting TONIGHT. I'm learning to be patient about getting my coop set up. The longer it takes, the more fun it will be when it's ready and the chickens are here.

Thanks Cynthia - they're getting the hang of their new home. They seem happy.

Lee - yea, we are to get sleet coming in tonight. But its supposed to turn to rain and not accummulate this time. Oy! I'm so ready for Spring! You'll love being a chicken owner.

I already love chickens and I don't have any yet

When I lived in Venezuela, I raised parakeets and that was great fun! Catching a parakeet wasn't too hard. I'm going to need to learn how to pick up a chicken.

What breeds are you planning to put in the bator?

Thanks Mahonri!

LRD - I'm going to load up pretty much the same breeds in the bator. Delaware, EE, Ameraucana, RSL, BSL, maybe some BLRW.

So you lived in Venezuela....cool! Hey, my first birds were parakeets! My Dad started me raising them as a teenager.

I pick up chickens by holding their wings down, against the body. Then tuck them under the arm like you would carry a football, with your hand under the body for support.
