Hey everyone,

One of my chicks is a week old and I just noticed a large lump on the right side of her neck/chest area. It popped up pretty much out of nowhere. I checked on everyone this morning and when I did the same thing this afternoon I saw this huge lump. It seems to have broken her skin right above her wing. There isn’t any blood but you can see her skin/veins.

Any ideas what it is? I’m really worried and am having a hard time posting pictures.

Impacted gizzard? If someone could tell me how I can post a couple photos!

It looks like it could potentially be just a normal crop. The spot where the blood veins are showing looks a lot like just normal chick skin, which can be very thin sometimes especially around the wings.

How is she acting? If she's lethargic then it might be an internal injury or impacted crop. If she acting normally, then it could just be something she ate and she'll be fine once it digests.

She seems to be drinking normally and was walking around the brooding box normal. I’ll keep an eye on it tomorrow and post an update. The open skin looked like an injury as I have never raised chicks before! I hope you’re right and will get back to you tomorrow. Thank you!!

Did you ever find out? I have the same problem and chick isn't growing even though she's eating
