Lumpy eggs

One of my leghorns just started laying lumpy eggs about a week ago. The egg is white, poor lighting.

I was wondering if she was getting too much calcium, I do give them free will oyster shells and was wondering if this could be the problem.

I do let them free range during the day. I have six other hens and only one of the leghorns is having this problem.

Many hens will lay those occasionally. It's thought that they have a bit too much calcium, but I personally wouldn't limit oyster shells. Older hens are more prone to them. They seem to come and go. I just figure it's a glitch in the system.

Could be glitch in the shell gland or an anomaly in that hens metabolism.

Thanks for the replies, the hen is about a year old. She laid another lumpy egg today. Since we get way more eggs than we eat we have been throwing the lumpy eggs out.

When you say comes and goes, any idea on how long this should last?

You can eat them, there should be nothing wrong with them inside.
Only time will tell if it will pass and when.

Just thought I would update the thread. The lumpy egg layer is now laying normal eggs again. I was a little over a week with the lumps, but they are now back to normal.

Good to know, updates help others if they have they same troubles. Now I will be curious to see if it happens again or not. Thank you, and glad they are normal again.
