Has anyone else had a vet give their duck or any birds Lupron to stop them from laying eggs ?

I’m looking for others to see if they have had issues after

Back story
Dasher my pekin / khaki Campbell girl was born dec 25 2021
She started to lay eggs in april 2022
In December 2022 I found her with a slight prolapse and a lot of gleet outside her vent
Out of 16 ducks she was my only one to have this
We started with my local vet
They did antibiotics and fixed her prolapse
Then when it wasn’t cleared a second round of an antibiotic
When still not cleared I was sent to an avian vet
Who did X-rays , blood work and testing of her poo
She was again put on an antibiotic
She had gleet inside and outside
She would need to be cleaned daily so she didn’t get blocked from peeing
I used colloidal silver spray and monistat cream on the outside
By this time we are in march and still having these issues
Thousands of dollars in vet bills
This girl continued to lay eggs daily all through this
Her eggs were normal but at times would take longer ti lay as her insides were swollen from the gleet issues
Back to the avian vet
She suggests giving her Lupron to stop laying eggs ti give her vent a break
She told me there is no issues with it and she will stop laying within the week
First shot not much of a change
Eggs looked a bit smaller
Second shot and still she is laying eggs but now they are paper thin
Touch them and they break
Now I have a whole new issue to add to my poor bird
Finally my vet listened to me and did a fungal test ( why wasn’t this done 4 months earlier :(
Weeks go by and finally the results are in
She has aspergillosis
She needs anti fungal meds
250.00 a month for 3 months
Her eggs are still paper thin
We stopped the Lupron shots at that time
By July my girl was clear of aspergillosis!!!!
But her eggs were still not normal
The Avian vet refuses to believe the Lupron did this
A full year of egg laying
Nice beautiful hard eggs to taking 2 Lupron shots and her eggs are forever changed
My girl is still laying eggs daily
This bird is going on almost 22 months straight
10 months after her last Lupron shot and her eggs are paper thin or soft shell
With winter her D intake is much less and this is when I noticed the soft shells start
A month ago we had 3 with one break inside her
She was put on antibiotics
Now after 2 weeks of very cold weather and being inside the coop 24/7 with no sun we are back to soft shells with a missing yolk
We are back on antibiotics starting last night
My vet has finally agreed we need ti consider the Lupron caused a D deficiency and this is why no matter how much calcium she gets it’s not absorbing
I did do 2 weeks of rooster booster in the feed and it did help go from soft shells to paper thin
But after a week off of it we went back to soft shell
Her sister is also still laying eggs for 22 months straight but has normal eggs
Mom duck is on her winter break as are many of my other girls
Just my young ones who just started are laying right now
No idea why these 2 girls won’t break !!
We are 4000 or better into this bird now
We love her so much and I just want her to go back to her normal self
I have ordered a calcium and D 3 solution that goes in water but it’s not to be given with other medications
So we need to wait till this antibiotic is finished
I did start giving her infant D a few days ago when I noticed the first soft shell egg again

If you have had any issues with Lupron or d issues please help

This site is a trusted site that I assume even vets use. It's saying Lupron causes reduced bone density. So, exactly what you're doing with the calcium and Vit. D would be the treatment. It doesn't come out and say egg issues but I'd think that goes without saying it.

I wonder why your vet didn't have you start Dasher on those before taking the Lupron.

After the antibiotic is done, I'd give Dasher probiotics too for a couple of weeks at least.

I hope she improves now with your good care!

Poor Dasher and poor duck mommy! What an emotional roller coaster! :(

Does Dasher like fish? Canned sardines in water, the kind with the skin and bones (they sell them for a dollar a can at Aldi) is high in vitamin D, and tasty fresh herbs like cilantro and dandelion can aid in detoxing her body from any Lupron remaining. Though I see that you are in Canada and may not have any fresh plants growing right now? In that case, you can get dried dandelion and cilantro (and I'd throw in some milk thistle, too) from an herb shop (or online from MountainRoseHerbs or even Amazon) and mix it in with her food and/or water every day.

I hope she gets better soon! 💕

I haven’t had issues with it myself but have seen others mention if the dose isn’t right it can cause issues with the shells. Ducks need a high dosage and it affects each bird differently.

I would try the suprelorin or consider salpingohysterectomy if you are having serious egg issues. But also work on anything environmental that is contributing to excessive egg laying as the drugs really aren’t that effective as a sole treatment.
