Jennifer came home on Friday, and we got to see her yesterday. Bone marrow is once again producing white blood cells and her count although very low is climbing. Her hair loss seems to have stopped and regrowth has started. Told her that her look is only temporary: whereas, mine is permanent. Got a weak smile for my attempt at humor. The good thing is that her appetite has returned. She is eating continuously.

My daughter has been going from specialist to specialist since she was 13 (she will be 17 in a few days) with an unspecified auto-immune disease. I have been told it is likely Lupus although her doctor wants to withhold diagnosis until they get a positive ANA or until she displays more symptoms.

She was having flares so frequently that the school was considering placing her in a special home school program due to absences. She would go from feeling fine to being rushed to the ER with pneumonia within 5 hours. Her feet would swell (this was her initial symptom) to two times their normal size making it impossible for her to wear anything but flip flops. Headaches, fevers, mood swings, infections, colds were a constant until her doctor ran more bloodwork. The results showed she had low vitamin D. The doctor told me to give her 1500 IU of vitamin D3 a day. Nearly all of her symptoms went away. We can now go months without an ER visit. If she misses a dose or two, she gets sick within a couple of days.

I can't promise vitamin D will help your grandaughter but it is definitely something that should be discussed with her doctors. I would ask them before giving it to her since she is having kidney issues, I'll be praying for you all.

I've was diagnosed with Lupus over 10 years ago. My mother has it and so did two of her sisters. It's frustrating to deal with it as an adult. Can't imagine a child going thru it. Your in my thoughts.
