Hey guys, I'm the proud new (novice) owner of a mixed flock of 5 backyard birdies. My husband and I live in a town that doesn't allow chickens in city limits for lots under 5 acres, but we associate this rule with the rules against collecting water, planting gardens, etc found in many towns across the country. These are laws designed to prevent Americans from being independent, to keep us vulnerable and controlled. So of course we ignored the dumb ordinance as have some of our neighbors, our street is pretty remote and certainly not the subject of much attention.
My flock is made up of a 6 week old Amerecuana (?) hen, two 4 week old guinea hens, and two 10 day old barred rock chicks. We were wrongly informed at Rural King that all the barred rock chicks were female, I suspected my favorite pick was male until the clerk said that and I whisked them both home, they preferred being on my shoulder under my jacket to the carrier. We got those two last, they were 3 days old and we brought them home to our other 3 older babies.
We didn't realize they should be brooded separately but amazingly, the older birds accepted them right away and I only take then to a separate brooder at night when I'm not supervising. If anything the baby chicks push the big birds around!!!
I am a tad but worried we are in over our heads here, mostly because I see now how mug work it will be to keep their area sanitary. We are building a coop and a small run.
My little roo baby has the best personality of all and is clearly very attached to me, only now has he stopped chirping for me on and off all night ( only stopping when I come to the brooder at which point he is totally fine). My guineas are amazing and curious and friendly. My Amerecuana is the problem child, it's as though she was mishandled in the store. She is so skittish, I thought guineas were the wild ones!
Anyways, I love this community and plan to start a thread specifically addressing some major questions I have, I could use some insight!
