hey all
have been away for a month and come home to a chicken with flystrike and maggots and diarrhoea (had house sitters looking after them)
i have removed all the maggots visible and sprayed the wound with iodine and placed her in confinement
she also has diarrhoea and i assume that that is how she got fly strike
how do i get rid of the diarrhoea? are there any foods to feed? i’m from new zealand and we don’t have many of the common products i see to treat it online and don’t have time to order them from a website
local vets are also not much use as they don’t specialise in small animals or poultry
maybe it would be best for the chook to be put down? obviously i don’t want that but i’m not sure what else to do at this point

Post some pictures? (poop, wound)

Electrolytes may take care of the diarrhea temporarily. (1 tsp baking soda, 1 pinch salt, 1 tsp sugar or corn syrup, 2 litre water) but they're not a long-term solution.

Live culture yogurt can help start up some new healthy gut bacteria so she can digest things more easily. That may help take care of the bacteria. Give about a tablespoon. If you can find probiotics, even better. I have used calf probiotics successfully in chickens (just a dab of paste on the end of my finger)

Can you get a fecal float done? If not, can you get your hands on Safe-Guard wormer?

Is your weather wet and warm? Coccidiosis is a diarrhea-causing factor catalysed by dirty living conditions.

thank you so much!! will post some pics asap
unfortunately i have found dead maggots and fly eggs in her poop- it’s basically just water and some white/yellow stuff :( it’s not looking good at all
it’s warm here but not wet and they live in a large pen with a house with hay that is changed regularly
i doubt a fecal float could be done but i do have ivomec on hand but google says that it’s possinly toxic to poultry?
my father is home tomorrow so if it sounds too bad he can put her down :(

here are some pictures
the green longish things are what i think may be maggots, i zoomed in on what may be fly eggs but now that i look closer i could be wrong?
as you can see she’s in pretty rough shape, the wound looks almost necrotic :/
(the yellow on her is iodine)

Buttermilk may be more easily absorbed than yogurt for the probiotics. The green is likely bile in the droppings. Is she eating? Maggots will be white or cream colored usually. Do you feel any bloat in her abdomen? How is her crop? Should be empty in the morning before access to food or water. You need to continue to check her several times a day for any new maggots that may hatch and remove them all.

Many people use Epsom salts in warm water to soak the chicken a couple of times a day until maggots are gone. Soapy water with dishwashing liquid also works. They will continue to hatch out for a day or two, so repeated soaking is important. Remove any maggots with tweezers that don’t come off in the water. Do you have an antibiotic ointment available in NZ? Here is some more reading about fly strike in chickens:

yes she is eating :) i’m about to go down and check her but yesterday i didn’t feel any bloat, just a very sharp chest bone as i assume she hasn’t been absorbing any nutrients
i’ll try get some buttermilk today if not then tomorrow
thank you so so much for your help

yesterday i soaked and washed the area with saline water and used tweezers to remove any visible maggots but know that i missed some that crawled back into the skin (yuck)
yes i can probably find some antibiotic cream but if not will iodine do the trick? i’m nervous about touching the area as it looks very sore
i will soak her a couple more times today and continue that until no more hatch
thank you very much for your help
