Hi there,
My year and a half year old Rhode Island Red was infested with maggots. She had some kind of wound that got infested. I found her the other morning ended up taking her to a vet that deals with chickens. The vet flushed her and picked off every last maggot. Since then she is home, in a cage in the house. Her wound looks better, but she can't stand and won't eat or drink on her own. I tried putting her in the roost and she was able to stand on that, but she can only sit leaning to one side. When I took her outside she perked up a bit

Oops hit send by accident,

Anyway, she perked up a bit, but still wouldn't move on her own.

Any thoughts?

! Happy you joined us! Sorry to hear about your chicken but glad the vet got her cleaned up! Good luck with her recovery!

Have you tried tempting her with plain yogurt, watermelon, grapes, finely mashed boiled egg yolk with some yogurt to moisten, - you may want to get some Polyvisol infant drops(NO IRON) to help build her up - you could give her 2 drops 3 times a day on something she will eat, or put the drops just inside her beak, so she can decide to swallow.

Maggots can travel thru the body and even end up at the brain. Keep watch that she doesn't have anymore. Keep her away from flies, or she may very well get reinfected.

Thanks everyone, she did well for about a week. Then had a seizure and died...I think she had,had a stroke, which made her susceptible to the maggots and that was the initial injury. I had brought her inside and nursed her back to health though and she had been getting stronger.
I learned a lot about chickens from her. My she rest in peace.
