hi there
I'm on day 4 of sick hen. She is approx 6-8 months old. Neighbors got her from a hatchery and raised her from a chick. All other hens in flock seem to be fine.
She cannot stand, is severely skinny with a hard crop day 1 and 2. I gave her spinach, Greek yogurt, olive oil and water day 1 and 2 and massaged the crop. Day 3 crop reduced and she was having more solid poops. She also consumed a lot of water, spinach and yogurt, cucumber and strawberries. Day 4 she didn't eat or drink as much, but downed a lot of yogurt and cucumber.

Since she has been having more solid poops, I started to clean her bottom and realized she has maggots or little worms crawling all over her bottom! Could parasites be the issue for not being able to stand and severe weight loss and now there just showing on the exterior?

What would some next steps be? Any foods I should stay away from?

I planned on giving her some electrolytes and rooster boost for vit. B

If she's not lethargic, I would give her bottom a good soaking and wash off all the poop.
I do see what looks like lice, but if you think there's maggots too, definitely try to get them off as well.
I agree, use some Permethrin poultry spray to get rid of the bugs.

Looks like she has the start of a prolapse going on - the red tissue at her vent, you really should not be seeing that. I would feel inside her vent for an egg just to make sure.
Once you get her cleaned up apply a little ointment to her vent to help keep that moist.

If her crop is not emptying, then you may need to treat her for sour crop. I would also try giving 1 stool softener to her to see if that helps break down what's in the crop. The yogurt is o.k. to give, I would offer a bit of wet feed, leave off the spinach, mash up the strawberry and make grit available free choice.

Here's some info about crop problems https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...w-to-know-which-one-youre-dealing-with.73607/

As for her not being able to walk - hard to know what's causing that. It may be lack of nutrition or disease like Marek's. Time will tell.

If there are indeed maggots, that is fly strike, and it’s a life threatening condition. Please do give her a good wash and determine if that’s what you are seeing. But I agree do not soak her if she’s lethargic, as that could make her worse. You might be able to gently wash her back end with a squirt bottle if she’s too sick to soak. I recommend doing it with warm water in a very warm room. If you can pull an area heater into whatever space you’re working in, that would be a good idea.
