I bought this Incubator (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KD75VHW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1?) a few years ago and would finally like to put to use since my calls are laying. Has anyone used this incubator before? I'm totally lost when it comes to this type of thing, I bought a " Qooltek thermometer" with the incubator, but i have had them running for quite some time and they seem to be way off from each other, which one should i trust? I have it in my mini-fridge for insulation with the door propped open slighting for oxygen, Is that ok? Any tips would be appreciated regarding this model. @Jpat Thought I remembered you saying you have this model.

Yess i have that incubator and so does @MGG

they are called Janoel12, lots of manufacturers buy them and label them differently but its a janoel12 in the end
The common metheod of use is wrapping it in a blanket without covering the vents

Personaly mine was dead accurate, MGG seid theirs was a few degrees high

The first step to setting up any incubator is calibrating a few thermometers
Have you calibrated thermometers before?

Never, I have two digital thermometers on hand.

Okay so you bring water to a rolling boil and test the temp of the water 100°

Then you make a crushed ice water slurry and test that temp 0°
Then you average out the difference and that will tell you how wrong your thermometers are

I right the difference in marker right on the thermometers

I just did my first hatch using a Janoel 12 - 6/8 eggs hatched in this incubator hatched vs 2/6 in my Brinsea! Not sure what happened with the Brinsea, but my point is that these little incubators work just fine for a budget set up. I will be using it again!

The trickiest part for me was humidity, mine did not hold it very well, I had to be very vigilant. They seem to be very well suited for dry hatching.

I used cheap digital thermometer/hygrometer combos that I found on Amazon, but I am thinking of upgrading to something I can calibrate. That said, the readings seemed to be on. I set them near my thermostat and they read the same temperature or within 1-2 degrees of the thermostat. My surrounding environment is cool, so I had to increase the temp on my Janoel 12 to the max (40.0c) to read 99 degrees on the thermometers. I would trust your secondary thermometer, especially if you are able to calibrate it.
