Well I've 3 magpie ducks and a drake. The other week I noticed eggs in a nest I just thought they're all laying in there - went inside and came out to find piglets had broke out and wrecked nest and ate eggs.

My black/white magpie duck started acting weird as if depressed I actually thought she was really sick. This went on for two days.

Now a couple days ago she perked up ALOT I went in to find she made a new bigger and better nest and was sitting on X amount of eggs :D

She is doing great (I've never had a broody of any kind) but she seems ok.

Question is, she leaves the nest often, to eat and drink and still comes out to free range for a few hours in the morning before returning to nest.

Is this ok? Or should I be keeping her in nest at all times? :/

I am hoping and guessing you took care of the piglet risk, first

I have a few Runners and a Buff who go broody. Their pattern is, start getting cranky, then one day collect a few eggs and make a nest, get crankier and more strange by the day, then one day demand to be let back into the night shelter to sit on the eggs. Sit tight for about 12 hours at a time, take a break twice a day that may be half an hour, an hour, or ten minutes (broody pooop! ack!
