Mahonri's 2nd Annual BYC EASTER HATCH. Post pics of your chicks!

I KNOW!! And one of the chicks that got in was a large fowl Fav!!!

It looks like I used the same kind and they really objected to it. They would stand on their tippy toes and push head and shoulders out the top or try to crawl out of the side. They'd get stuck and screech their little heads off. That's why I decided to pull a bunch out before the hatch was done. I had one stuck Poo Bear fashion in the corner.

The Iowa Blues were small enough they DID get out, but at least I could tell which ones they were.

Ok I should be good if I start collecting eggs today right? I want them fresh. I hope I'm not starting too soon.

I set 14 in the weeeee hours of the morning, because I had collected the ones I wanted for 3 days.

I've got egg songs going on right now, so I'll go check for them in a while. Two of my Games flew the fence again and have been laying for the neighbors. Lots of people in that tiny house, so I just tell them to keep the eggs and use them.

Now if my BCMs would just work over time. I wish I knew which ones weren't laying anymore, or if any are laying infertile or whatever. Most of them are 3 and 4 years old now. Of course they're the ones I want to replace as breeders.

Only have a few pullets and I've hatched their eggs out, so should be good with those. I want more from my Wellie X Pene though. She laid two and stopped. Working on darker eggs. And my lone Silkie hen was the first to start up laying again. Got 3 eggs and nothing since. Bought a pullet that had been laying, but nothing since I got her. I think the hen just harrasses her too much. I was so hoping my Favs would be laying by now. Combs are still pale though darn it.

NOICE. I've been wanting Iowa Blues for some time, so am stupidly excited to hatch some out.

Between getting them and my lavender Ams, I'm a happy Hurley. Oh! And I've got blue/splash splits for "fuzzy" Ameraucanas coming too!

Man, I would love to have Paint Ams to put in the bator for Easter, too. Guess I'll have to get out there and have Thomas chase some chickies for some good flaps.

Ok, I've got big shoes to fill (thanks Kathy)... but I'm going to do my absolute best to keep track of the contests and prizes. If I'm missing anything or you'd like to clarify your prize/contest/etc please let me know.

Mahonri's 2nd Annual BYC Easter Hatch Contests:

1. Best Hatch Rate Contest:

For this contest during this hatch, participants will be hatching a minimum of 20 eggs. Post how many you will have cooking by Monday 04 April 2011 and then don't go back and edit your post where you tell us how many eggs you start with. When the hatch is over, you'll take a pic and post it to show us how many you actually got... it would be nice if we could count them.
In the event of a tie, the one who hatches the most chicks wins.

2. Cutest Chick Picture:
Pic will need to be taken and posted by or before 11:59PM on April 26th... We'll be asking folks in the hatch as well as some moderators to help me judge if they are willing. There will be 1st and 2nd place awards given

3. Guess for # of chicks Mahonri hatches:
Guesses need to be made before 11:59:59PM on April 6th. The guesses will be posted on post 1 somewhere beside the hatch participant's name.
In order to help break a tie, you'll also need to guess the breeds of the first three chicks out. If you want to know what breeds are in Mahonri's bator read the thread!

4. Best Overall Hatch Participant:
This will be determined by vote of participants in a PM to Mahonri. Votes will start on April 25th and end on April 27th.

5. "Revolutionmammas" First Chick Contest:
For the first chick hatched BEFORE the target time. Contestants must show picture of chick hatching with proof of time.

9. Dsqard's Unknown Contest: WEEK TWO CONTEST
To be announced

10. Rooster Crowing Contest: WEEK THREE CONTEST
Sponsored by Gryeyes. Post your picture of a rooster crowing. Note: Winner of the last Rooster Crowing Contest (NY Hatch) must come up with a different photo (if participating this time) but other NYD Hatch entries can be re-submitted for everybody's enjoyment and competition. This photo must be a REAL rooster, no photoshopping, no images taken from commercial and/or professional sites, can belong to the entrant OR a friend, family member or other live person who gives you permission to use the photo. We want BYC roosters, y'hear? If you don't have a rooster, ask a friend or neighbor WITH a rooster if you can take pictures ... Or if they have a bona-fide rooster crowing photo to lend you. Roosters may be living or memorialized.
Prize: a solar-powered Rooster yard ornament. Really cute in a cheesy sort of way. (After all, real roosters don't glow at night... [unless they're in Japan --SCG])

We also have the following offers/prizes that don't have a home yet:
1. Buy 6 get 15$ off Purina Feed Coupon. Eligible products include 50 lb bags of Layena, Start & Grow (medicated or not) or Flockraiser, or 25 lb FlockBlocks. Coupon expires 12.31.11 and offered by SuperChemicalGirl
2. Dsqard has offered to sponsor a chicken on the head contest... no prize yet, unless you want to use the coupon?
3. Gryeyes has offered up 2 more solar yard art: Chicken with Chicks.
4. Hurley has offered a copy of The APA 2010 Standards of Perfection
5. Dsqard has offered a plush chicken as a prize

Also for those of you keeping track, the food dye enema did not work (or both chickens "treated" did not lay today, very unlikely).

It makes sense to me that it doesn't work if you think about it anatomically. When a chicken lays an egg her reproductive tract actually pushes out of her vent a small amount so the egg never actually touches the vent. So any dye in the vent is cut off from the reproductive tract and thus will not dye the egg.

But if colorful poo is your goal...

I'm also willing to state that my n was only 2 so I could be completely wrong and off base here...

Thanks daisychick, wolftracks, NotAFarm, CRYSTALCREEK, and Cloverleaf Farm! That's a lot of feedback! To sum up, there's no need to use pedigree baskets to separate different breeds unless you have some reason to know when they are young. If you use hardware cloth, use a file to remove sharp points, and you can also make baskets using plastic canvas. Suet cages work well, but little chickies might get in.

So, I’m thinking I’ll just put one of the two lines of Barnevelders in a basket and let everyone else mix. Then, I’ll have fewer chicks to leg band, but should know who is who.

OK, I need some help here thinking of a good contest.

As I did before with the NYD hatch, I just ordered myself a new book and bought 2, 1 to donate to the contest.

The book?

Need a good contest... will think on it.

Just put the order in, so not sure on timing for shipping from them, but will ship when contest is over or when I receive the book, whichever comes later.
